Welcome to the “battle station” part of the studio, please ignore the mess and the chaotic-neutral monitor setup. I want to draw your attention to two things.

1. On the very far left, with a pile of stuff on top is a laser printer. It’s a very old, capable, cheap, reliable thing, despite being an HP.

2. In pretty much the middle of the photo is the Bantam Tools NextDraw 8511, which is the one Kitty (my AI PA) is wired up to.

As I mentioned previously, Kitty writes out my morning todo lists on that plotter. It also writes envelopes out for me, as the handwriting Kitty uses is far neater than my own.

In fact, I’ve been getting Kitty to write out, or “print” more and more for me; and honestly it doesn’t make much sense, other than you use the tools you know and I don’t like having to turn all the way around take the stuff off the laser printer and get it connected to the WiFi each time.

When I’ve found myself wanting to print something, like a packing list (for sending out the postcards to the Patreon peoples), I’ve taken to just having Kitty write it out. It’s slower sure, but it’s also super convenient; I often “print” onto A6 index cards or A5 notes, and I can just set it away, get on with something, then grab it from the plotter when I’m done.

Last weekend I decided to finally do something I’ve been meaning to do for ages; a markdown to handwriting tool! It looks like this, which is the same UI I use for writing letters and notes.

Over in the top right corner is where I’d normally write/paste the text I want to be written, but in this instance you can see I’ve got markdown format in there too.

I have headings, bold - which is done by writing over the same word a couple of times - underlining and strikethrough. I haven’t bothered with italic (mainly because I’m convinced that italics in handwriting isn’t really a thing), ir all the rest of the markdown stuff.

Below is the same text being turned into my much worse handwriting.

These aren’t fonts! This is text turned into dynamically created SVG single stroke handwriting specifically to be plotted with a pen in a drawing machine, whatever I type gets converted into proper writing-writing, and in my case full joined-up cursive writing.

You can see the end result of Kitty’s handwriting, and my own bad handwriting down below.

And if you’re curious, here’s a 5min video of both of the notes above being written, which I’m not expecting you to sit through the whole of - although it can be quite mesmerising - just that it’s easier to show a bit than explain.

I’ve had several ways of doing and automating this over the years, but I’m finally gathering all the variations together to make my life easier, and markdown support (for handwriting, lol) was the last item on my todo list.

I’ve just looked back even further, to Nov 2023, and I can see an almost identical photo of my desk at the start of that newsletter as I have on this one, but that one is a lot clearer and tidier!

# PLOTS & FLOWCHARTS

This month I think I’ve spent more time fine tuning and adjusting my tools to streamline pen plotting, than actual pen plotting. I’m telling myself it’ll pay off in the long-run.

One of those tools, which I’ve written more about over here: Patreon August Update One - Nodes - was all about automating the process of feeding a random seed into the “70s Pop” code, sending the results of that into the Kaleidoscope code, and then in turn to a scaling & placing bit of code.

Despite my dislike of nodes based code, I ended up writing some nodes based code 🙄

Having written the code, and also updating the text-to-writing pipeline, I figured why not turn the nodes themselves into SVGs to plot out.

Which, ummmm, worked surprisingly well. Next step, code that handwrites itself.

That, along with last newsletter’s chatter about printing zines and documenting processes has set me off down a whole new rabbit hole.

Maybe I won’t be happy until I can PEN PLOT ALL THE THINGS.

# THE END

The heatwave is over (I hope), rain has fallen, things have cooled down. I felt comfortable enough to do some more tutorial video recording, so that’s getting back on track now after about six weeks off.

It’s been bad!

The plan was to record all these tutorial videos, and then get back to recording “my own” videos about what I’m up to. But I find myself missing making #Weeknotes and documenting all the other things I’m up-to. I’m also feeling as those the tutorial videos are established enough that I can start to switched back and forth between formats and it’ll be fine. So that’s what I’m going to do.

Probably.

Maybe we’ll find out by the time the next newsletter comes out, on Thursday 3rd September, 2026!

The end result was a CYM(k) “plot”, which I then printed and also printed a zoomed in version.

# PROCESS ARTIFACTS

This rather wonderful book landed on my desk from Perimeter Books - although, if you’re in Europe I’d suggested buying it directly from Valiz, Amsterdam. From the blurb…

I’m about a third of the way through - which is easy to know as there’s about 30 essays in here, and I’ve read around 10 - it’s not the easiest read (to me) ‘cause by it’s very nature the language can be fairly academic. Several times I had to go back and re-read something because while I’d taken all the words in, they didn’t actually register and my brain hadn’t stuck them together in to a coherent whole.

All that said, I continue to be fascinated by the whole process; the act of art and creativity as research. Although it still feels like a field that’s finding it’s feet as people develop shared lexicon of ‘what should this whole thing be called’ - and people arguing where the edges are, and even if it should be a thing at all.

What I can tell you from reading most of the below, is there isn’t a simple “This is how you do arts/practice based research”, which is of course, annoying.

My main take-away though, is often the process is more interesting than the final result. The things we learn while trying to get to the end result are more useful than the end result itself, as are the debug views into our code and process.

And!!

Unless you’re putting on exhibitions which show off all your sketchbooks and a screen-printed wall of text explains what it’s all about, what we often show off as a couple of photos on Instagram or our Website, is just the end result.

It only took a couple of essays to remind me to PRINT MORE SHIT OUT.

Taking photos is fine, making videos is cool, but, but, but, there’s nothing quite like printing a photo zine of 10 or so process photos, and then just having it.

I’ve made a promise to myself to make more zines, 10 photos and a cover is easy, each “project” no matter how small should end up with either a zine, and “photo book” (in the very loosest of terms), or some postcards.

Because - and I say this with love - it doesn’t need to be complicated.

# QUICK THOUGHTS ON AI (again)

I’ve seen a trend…

Actually, let me rephrase that.

I clicked a thing in Instagram, or, I hovered too long over a Reel and now I’m seeing a lot of these, which follow the same pattern.

Designer sits at desk, points at the screen, there’s an image on the screen being transformed into ASCII type, or colourful blocks, or something.

There’s fucking shit loads of sliders on a panel to the right or left, or both sides of the UI, there’s so many, they scroll, hell, maybe even throw some buttons at the top or bottom too, why not.

‘Comment “TOOL” in the comments, and I’ll DM you a link’ the designer says.

The tool probably looks something like this.

It’s clearly and obviously been written with, or by, AI.

I’m fairly ambivalent about this; if you need an end result, and a tool can get you to that end result, then I’m not sure it makes a huge difference if that tool is written by a human or an AI (based on lots of work created by humans).

The end result will be pretty, meh, in most cases, because the AI tool is shallow, even with all the endless sliders - there’s not much vision.

BUT, when I see these tools, I’m all…

‘why would I use your tool? You’ve just created it with AI, I can literally just say to AI, ‘make me a tool that turns an image into ascii’ and have my own version. If the effort is essentially zero, I can just do it myself’

And then the AI will go off and rip off all the code done by humans who put the effort into working out how to turn images into ASCII text, and build a near identical tool.

What’s the point of making tools, pointing at them and going “I made this amazing thing” - when anyone can just make it?

Well, I had to put those assumptions and bias to one side because hundreds if not sometimes thousands of people were commenting “TOOL” and “OMG I need this tool”, and “That’s amazing, so cool”.

‘cause it turns out, that if I step outside my bubble of understanding both code and AI - that apparently it’s not “easy to just do it in AI”, because people would rather write “TOOL” in a comment and use something '“written” by someone else prompting an AI, than do it themselves.

There is still a knowledge and skill gap.

The lesson I should probably learn is to throw away any scruples I have, churn out a bazzillion “tools” with AI while that skill gap still exists, and farm engagement by forcing people to jump through hoops to get access to the thing I “made”, rather than just provide a link, because, ugh, late stage capitalism - probably.

No, my main take away is wanting to remove all the sliders and controls and knobs and inputs and so on, on the tools I actually wrote years ago, and come up with clean, simple and elegant UIs for interaction, because the part that seems to be missing is asking the question “how would a sane human want to interact with this calmly?”

# THE END

Last Friday was the last day of a five month contract [Hey, if you have some interesting new work, hit me up], and the last two to three weeks were pretty intense, so this week I was looking forwards to getting back to doing my own stuff.

I forgot about the whole decompression period, the weird lull after finishing a large job and odd emptiness. Each morning this week in my own ‘make and do art’ hours of the day I just couldn’t focus, the best I could manage was tidying up the studio getting it back to ship-shape condition, which is something I guess.

By today (Thursday) I’d abandoned all my plans, printed some riso experiments, and will try again next week. Including, the next few videos in the pen plotting YouTube series. Top priority, getting those back on track.

Well, hello, and welcome from London, where I’m currently melting; it’s hot down here and full of people. Honestly I don’t know how you do it.

I’ve been playing some more with the drawing machine and the iPad. I’ve “taught it” how to paint; i.e. coded in the position of the colour palette, and the brush selector, the the plotter can hit those parts of the screen.

Here’s a classic-ish “Pop” design, but drawn in a brush specifically designed for those “pile of bones” thrash metal logos.

Some did ask “but why?” - and “can’t you just do that with brushed along a path in Illustrator?” or similar - which is a fair question.

But where I wanted to take it was somewhere here (but good-er).

Which is using the Adobe Fresco iPad app that has some simulated colour mixed in it. Above is showing it dragging yellow “oil paint” through thick chunk red paint. Which is something you can’t do easily, if at all, with vectors in Illustrator.

Here’s another with the “Ghost” plot, and thinner lines.

Where if you look closely at the lines to the front, you can see the blue mixing in with the yellow, and yellow smudging the magenta lines.

I was supposed to send out the monthly postcards and cards to the Patreon people yesterday, but I asked them to give me another week as I felt there was a bit more to explore before I land on the final things.

Well, technically and artistically there’s a lot more to explore in this weird digital - analogue - digital thing going on. Pen plotting with digital pigment is a curious thing, and yet next month we’ll be moving onto something else!

Behind the scenes, the technical stuff isn’t complicated and there’s easier (I think) ways of doing this, but this is what I’m doing…

• Step one, connect the iPad to the laptop.

• Step two, open QuickTime and pick New Movie Recording, and select the iPad as a screen input. The iPad screen will now fill the QuickTime window.

• Step three, in my own OSX app, it grabs (with system permissions) whatever is in the QuickTime window - the window doesn’t need to be visible for this btw, it’s grabbing what would be shown in the QT window rather than grabbing the screen - small but useful detail. The QT window is the small one on the left in the above image.

• Step four, in my own app, it displays the contents of the QT window, but I can now put overlays on it, and I can click and drag on the window - which controls the pen plotter via the BantamTools python library.

The short is, once I’ve recorded the position the plotter needs to tap the top-left and bottom-right corners, we can then calculate any position and map anything on the virtual screen to the clicking and drawing on the actual iPad.

# POWER LINES PLOTTER ART

I enjoyed watching this video about the thinking behind and then execution of this project, it’s a good 10 minute watch while eating lunch.

I wish more people explained their art like this, although I can understand the many reasons why people don’t.

# GHOSTS

The Patreon plots this month got me back into plotting the “Ghost” design.

And had me also revisiting the tools I use to create it.

I’ve always used this page which started off as a spiral generator with Perlin noise and then dialled in the settings to give me a “ghost”, and there’s way more controls than I actually need.

So I rewrote a simplified version that focuses on just the things that I normally tweak, where I can grab nodes to adjust the starting and ending positions & radius, “flouncyness” and so on. Which means I can create “Ghosts” a lot faster and easier too.

I’m thinking about going back to other plots design I often use and reducing them down to just the values I normally tweak.

Always a joy to go back to old project and revisit them with fresh eyes and coding knowledge.

Another tool I kept coming back to was wanting to tile things easily, so I spent a lot of my spare time in the last two weeks working on that too.

When this newsletter goes out, I’ll probably be in a pub (not drinking) and being social, I’m sure it’ll be very enjoyable but many spoons will be spent. I’m very much looking forwards to being able to crash in a hotel room and just sleep with the air-con on full blast.

Normally I wouldn’t link to something still early in it’s work-in-progress phase, and there’s been changes and new features added since I last looked, so I guess, keep in mind that it’s in flux.

One of the reactions over on reddit made me laugh.

“This is both so dumb and so brilliant at the same time”

I think it’s wonderful and useful for a few reasons.

1. I’m making drawing machine tutorial videos (I may have mentioned it), and some people watching those don’t have a pen plotter yet. While you can just look at the SVG output, I think it’s more useful to be able to see what would (most likely) actually happen, and see it getting drawn. You get a much better sense of how your code relates to the actual act of plotting.

2. If I’m running workshops, or a class for students it’s normal for the number of students to outnumber the plotters, and also a single plot can take a while essentially blocking a whole machine. With this virtual plotter students can start experimenting and quickly iterating on designs, and also see something interesting happen based on their code.

3. If you have a drawing machine running at a gallery or show, it’d be fun to have the virtual one running on a screen nearby so people can pick from a list of designs and see them get “plotted” (the tool allows you to speed up the plot). Or even have two screens/system; one where people can twiddle-knobs to make their own design and then send to the Virtual plotter. The code is up on github so shouldn’t be hard to bridge like that.

4. [feature coming soon 🤞] - being able to select the plotter size, paper size and give it your design, then watch in horror when it tries to plot your A3 design onto an A5 sheet of paper, with an A4 plotter, with all the correct crunchy noises. Because we’ve all accidentally done that, and it’d be nice to sanity check a plot you’re about to do.

Thinking about it, if I were Bantam Tools, with access to the 3d cad files of the NextDraw, I’d snap up a custom version of this, swap out the plain rectangular carriages for NextDraw styled ones (it uses threejs after all) and put it on the website as a useful tool.

# IPADing

Alrighty, so, over on Patreon this month the theme is pen plotting, but on an iPad. Which is something I’ve been wanting to try for a while.

Specifically coding in the location of various bits of UI on the Procreate app, so Kitty (my AI PA) can have access to creating new pages, selecting brushes, colours and brush size, and then having a go a drawing.

There’s about a million reasons why this is somewhat foolish, but also, it’s fun, and maybe I can get Kitty to play Hearthstone too 🕹️

I knew the first thing I’d need would be a way to have the iPad always been in a known position relative to the plotter, so I took some measurements., which you can see here…

Then went through a number of iterations of a jig, four in total.

The last thing to do was take account of the camera bump in the corner of the iPad that makes it not lay flat - which is fucking weird from a design point of view if you think about it too much, Braun would never!

Anyway, I guess who needs the iPad to lay flat? Well, this guy.

So with a bonus corner, and 2.3mm high “ledges” I ended up with something that fixed to the feet of a NextDraw 8511, with the exact measurements to hold a 13” iPad Pro (M4 I think)

Which I know is incredibly niche, but once again an example of the usefulness of a 3d printer and being able to make your own shims and jigs for this kinda of thing, and also attaching things to the feet of the plotter is cool (imho).

# TOOLS

I like the “Art Studio Robots!” in the title of this newsletter, oh, but wait…

Annoyingly I can’t find the link because it showed up in my Instagram stream and now I can’t find it again. I mean it’s this reel from drawscape, but it was one that was shared/reposted 🤷‍♂️ on someone else’s account. So while this one has a couple of comments, the one I saw had like a gabillion…

…thankfully for me I saved a bunch of the comments, I’m going to put a few choice ones down below, grouped into Genus, this was the top one…

“To start, it’s not a robot, but an automaton, because it doesn’t make any decisions... but then, that technology already existed in 1953. As a hobby project it’s fine, but calls things by their name. Anyway, nice drawing.”

…and I don’t think that “Drawing Machines & Notes from Art Studio automaton” has quite the same ring to it.

There was also team “vector”

• Bro it’s called vectoring and it takes like 5 seconds

• Vectors 🚪🚶

• so its vectors

• Fancy way to avoid saying VECTORS

Now, while these people may be technically correct and technically cockwombles they appear to be failing to grasp the difference between saying-what-the-thing-is-technically-correctly and marketing.

While drawscape does isn’t my cup of tea, I think it’s a brilliant product/project; an ever growing library of “blueprints” that people can order, specify the paper and pen type, and then they’re pen plotted to order. It’s like a perfectly neat, self contained, well focused business, with little overheads except time and dedication.

The hard part is explaining, or marketing what exactly it is to people. First you have to explain why it’s different to normal printing, why they should care, how it’s not “mass produced” in the traditional sense, and there how it’ll make a great gift.

Saying “here’s a series of deterministically programmed toolpaths made from vertices and vectors, outputted as GCODE and draw with an automaton x,y plotter” doesn’t have quite the same ring, and means pretty much fuck all to anyone who doesn’t already know what the hell all that means.

(all those phrases were mentioned in the comments btw)

From the “it’s a plotter” gang, who don’t seem to grasp that “robot” makes more sense to most people than “plotter”.

• Look up the word “plotter” for goodness sake

• Pen plotter!!!… 🤣😂🤣😂 Hewlett Packard had HP 7475A, 7575A plotter back in 1980. I know because I got sick and tired of fixing, replacing, calibrating and adjusting the pen carriage and pen carriage belts!!! Beautiful device! Nothing new!!!

• Let’s reinvent the plotter and call it something else.

There’s also the “my 3d printer can do this” cohort, of which there were too many to mention, but this was my favourite…

“Imagine getting all excited because you’re using a 3D printer like it’s an ’80s plotter, when a 3D printer is literally just the evolution of those same plotters with one extra dimension added (2D → 3D).”

Drawscape is literally using a 2d plotter in the video.

I’m not even sure if their “my 3d printer can do this” is the flex they think it is while watching a video about a tool specifically designed to do the job it’s doing 🤷‍♂️

I guess the short take away from this is; if you try and make something easier for most people to understand - which is good - and you get a sudden influx of viewers (due to reposting or whatever), then with great views comes great fuckwittery.

Thankfully I didn’t attempt to respond to anyone, that way lies madness.

In the last newsletter I mention how it was hot, too hot, too hot to do anything.

Yeah, well, that, but with a couple more degree Celsius thrown on top, which means I’m technically 1.06451613% more hot and grumpy today than I was when I wrote the last newsletter. Which probably also explains why this one is about 30mins late, and most likely full of typos!

The next newsletter - Thursday 23rd July, 2026 for those following along at home - will hopefully be written in a somewhat cooler studio. Otherwise that one is even more likely to end up in the spam filter than this one due to excessive swearing.

I was going to make the next couple of Drawing Machine 101 videos this week, but I would die, so once again we’re waiting another week for those. I’m waiting for them all to be over so I can get back to normal making videos about what I’m doing.

Although I’m starting to feel that having a series of “how to code for drawing machines” on YouTube is going to be my only defence against “bro this was vibe coded!” - I can simply point them to far too many hours of hand written from start to end plotter code and tell them to come back to me after watching all that.

Actually those videos and all the previous ones going back years may be the only way to prove I’m a real human who can really code, thank goodness I started back then rather than now.

It’s too hot, I am grumpy, this is gunna be a short one, with a bunch of photos then we’ll get back to normal service.

Carrying on from last newsletter’s “Pottery Plotter Print Pipeline” where I got my hands on a clay plotter and went deep into making and exporting SVGs and GCODE pot shapes, I printed and plotted out of a whole bunch of cards for the Patreon gang.

And then a heap of Riso prints too; these photos can’t do justice to the fluorescent pink.

I have a new (self-imposed, made-up) thing now, where any excess get filed away for four months and then get put into the shop; if I haven’t already sent them off to people.

I say “the shop” like it currently works, which it still doesn’t, but perhaps it will in four months 🤷‍♂️

The idea was to have them all cut out, and then turn them into an animation, but I ran out of time, so here’s a poor-mans-time-lapse instead.

# GD STUDIO

This, popped up the other day, Marco sez…

A few months ago I picked up an iDraw H SE A3 and my first plots were mostly mathematical patterns. While working on those, I realized I wanted a single app where I could use sliders and settings to directly influence the final drawing. There are websites for specific patterns, and there are plenty of code examples available, but I wanted everything integrated into one macOS app.

Since I am an iOS/macOS developer, I built that app myself, with some help from Claude for the mathematical models.

Now I do like tools popping up that make designs for drawing machine, I like that software developers are using their skills to make these tools available - you can buy the full version of GD studio for €24.99 - being able to sell stuff is cool!

I have slightly complicated feelings about it all, for various reasons, but I generally fall on the side of making things easier for people to get into pen plotting the better.

And it seems more “here are lots of different algorithms all in one place” tools are popping up all the time, for some reason.

I absolutely suggest that you do not write weekly newsletters, or rather don’t write newsletters weekly, unless you really love writing newsletters, or, you do shit-loads of stuff every week.

A little how-the-sausage-is-made.

I keep a daily journal, in addition, at the start of each day I write down what I’m planning on doing, at the end I write down what I did. I post a daily photo to the notes section of substack. I take a whole bunch more photos and put them into Lightroom and then - not as often as I’d planned - my website, which I still need to redesign, again.

I’ve just started posting not daily Reels to Instagram - I’ll tell you how that’s going in a future newsletter - and of course, the videos over on YouTube; I just uploaded the Introduction to Module 3 and Anatomy of a Line videos, as part of the Drawing Machine 101 course.

I also have a page in Obsidian called “Things I’ve spotted for the next newsletter”, snappy I know.

So when it comes to writing this, I first check Obsidian, my journals, the list of things I’d planned on doing and actually did, then all the photos and videos as proof that any of these things actually happened.

Sometimes, there’s, nothing.

It’s surprising how easy it is to spend a lot of time being busy, doing stuff, good stuff! And not really having much newslettery to show for it.

…let’s just say it’s a lot of fun!

I think it’s also fair to say that if you already write code to create designs for a drawing machine you’d find modifying that code to write-files-for/control-a clay plotter incredibly easy.

I am not about to embark on becoming a potter, I already have enough on my plate without introducing a whole new thing. But having said that, the machine does just live downstairs, and after Kris has finished using it there will be spare clay that has to be used up, and I now have these files laying around.

I did however, create a tool that would let me preview the GCODE to get an idea of what something would look like before I sent it.

The last time I wrote a ray-tracer was back at Uni about 30+ years ago. Coming back to it now, the maths is still pretty much the same. I got it working but I also managed to create something so bad that it actually ran the battery down on the laptop while it was plugged in. Something I didn’t even know was possible.

And then things got weird.

A FAVOUR ABOUT ARCHIVES & DEATH

Meanwhile, I have a favour to ask, two actually, about the same thing.

We - Deep Keep - made a thing called KeepRight (I’ll quickly write why & the background in a moment), it’s about creating a “declaration” about what you’d like to happen to an item, archive, collection after you’re no longer responsible for it (i.e. dead, but not always), and not necessarily your own stuff.

So the first favour is about questions.

With a collection/archive of things in mind; physical, digital, mixed, yours, other peoples’, go through the process of creating a declaration for it: https://keepright.info/declaration - we kept it deliberately short to start with, should take like 3mins.

Then let me know (or via the usual channels) what questions we are missing. I’m looking for blind-spots and how it didn’t (or did) work for the things you had in mind.

If you’re into specs, schemas, systems, extendability, transportability and/or longevity/data retention, or know someone who is can you give me a once over on where I’m being a fucking idiot, or if it all makes sense.

I’ve done the internet, technology, code and development for years, but even backed by all that this is the first spec/schema I’m putting together for the big-wide-world and while I think it makes sense, a second pair of (human) eyes is always good.

The very (very) quick why; we did a whole bunch of stuff with Flickr and archives of people’s photos. We recognised that what we learnt (more on that on the flickr dot org blog; lots of research lots of workshops) extended beyond that, and there were some juicy problems to solve around keeping shit around for a long time (hence setting up Deep Keep).

But it became super obvious that we needed a small layer in front of just “keeping stuff for a long time” - i.e; context, intention, provenance, governance - that sits alongside copyright (or lack of), and can be printed out and stuffed into a folder/shoe box, kept digitally for humans/machines, or both.

For people here that may be; “what do I want to happen to my art/art-collection when I die?”

# EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

I am not a potter, I am a print guy. I love having an A2 printer full of various tones of archival ink and draws of archival paper - almost as much as I love stationery.

I also half own a Riso print studio.

Having a tool that previews GCODE for what a pot may look like, that uses Threejs and webgl gives me access to all the “normals” - which is a shortcut to “how much is this 2d point on the canvas (calculated from a 3d point) pointing towards or away from the light”; i.e. how light or dark is this point.

Which means in addition to the ray traced image, you can get all fancy-pants and throw on a halftone effect…

…which you can separate out into different print channels…

…and then load up into your Riso Studio software to check the colour plates, layout and levels.

Then, you can add the ability to rotate the pot and save out X number of “frames”, to be sent to the Riso printer (and normal printer)…

…but also all the matching SVGs needed for the drawing machine.

So now I’m in the slightly overwhelming position of being able to use a souped up version of my drawing machine code to design pots, vases and perhaps teapots, that can be '“printed/plotted” in clay as an actual real 3d object to be fired and glazed, but also Riso printing, Giclée printed and drawn with whatever pen/pencils/brush etc you want.

# THE END, DOUBTS & SOCIAL PROOF

Spotted this the other day from Applied Craft.

Which looks great, I haven’t used it, and anything that brings down the barrier to entry is good. I can especially get behind the “yeah, this GCODE part is specifically written for me” bit.

It’s also a bit of an odd feeling for me. I’ve spent so long putting off, and then starting to make the Drawing Machine 101 tutorials, that I can feel the relevance of them slipping away as AI develops.

I don’t know how Applied Craft has developed the software, but the UI has the rounded generated with AI look about it, which is fine. And we’re at the point that if someone wants to create a pen plot drawing they don’t need to know how to do that, or even use someone else’s tool or software to do it, they can just ask AI.

Which brings me back to; why the hell am I making videos teaching people how to code things that AI can build for them in minutes?

And I think the answer is two fold.

1. Code as Craft - potters still make pots, people still write letters with fountain pens, typewriters are being meticulous repaired.

2. Social Proof - in the future, when I’m making drawing machine art, and someone inevitably says “that was created with AI” or “that was vibe coded” I’ll have a playlist of 40 or so videos of me hand writing code step by step from start to finish, and YouTube videos that predate AI showing my work, that I can point to.

It’s like keeping public sketchbooks in a way, and I’m glad I did it, and continue to do it.

A Poem/1 arrived the other day, not out of the blue, I did order it.

It’s an AI clock, which updates once a minute with a new time based poem. Worth noting at this point that each poem is generated centrally and the clocks are just fetching them. So only one bottle of water used per minute, rather than one per minute per clock - or whatever the standard measurement of AI use currently is.

It’s charming, because there’s something obviously off about each poem, it’s very much an AI throwing words together with a LLM, rather than, you know, good.

A Vogon Clock, if you will.

Which is slightly snappier than a Millstone Clock, from actual worst poet in the universe; Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of 37 Wasp Villas, Greenbridge, Essex.

This is the kind of non-threatening AI that I like, one that is entertainingly not going to steal anyone’s job, apart from perhaps Paula’s.

It reminds me of very early Midjourney image generation, here’s v1 when it first came out and I asked it to create some spaceports…

I think where I’m landing with AI is; I like AI that run locally, on my own (often low powered) devices, preferably ones I can train with my own data, i.e. the type of thing artists have been exploring with GANS/Neural Networks.

The AIs I’m not keen on; the ones using giant data centres, trained off pirated books, that take your job and lie to you.

I’m sure I’m being hypocritical somewhere, and the line-in-the-sand I’ve draw in very wishy-washy and prone to ebb and flow.

I’m not throwing the whole of AI in the bin, I just like it to be obviously a bit rubbish, rather than slickly looking not rubbish (while still being rubbish).

One of the reasons why I got the Poem/1 is that Matt has made it nice and easy to send text to the device via a simple API.

I know, I know, working with various eInk displays with a laptop, or Raspberry Pi, or esp32 (probably, idk), is supposed to be pretty trivial, but I legit don’t have the time. But give me an API endpoint I can throw text at, and it just-work™️ and I’m all in.

In this case I piggybacked on the code already in Kitty that sends these questions to the Vestaboard, and got it to also hit the Poem/1 API. Took about three minutes in total, and now Kitty can bother me in yet another way.

# PAPER CRM

This video from Russell Davies (not that one), is worth a watch, at x1.5 speed.

There’s a whole bunch of things to unpack there which I’m not going to because I’m supposed to be at some social event in about 30 minutes, in this heat, with lots of people, WHY?! But I digress, as we all know I love paper.

I have code that;

• Creates a todo list written by Kitty on her pen plotter

• Dynamically creates a calendar template, also to be pen plotted (here’s a public version: https://revdancatt.com/calendar)

• Generates pages for my notebook

• Writes out my daily journal in my own handwriting, for reasons.

• Creates PDFs based on my week, that gets sent to my ReMarkable eInk tablet so I can annotate them by hand “offline”.

That first one isn’t particularly CRM, the second isn’t very innovative - I can just go buy a calendar, or print one normally - the third is a little closer; it’s a page design that I’ve iterated over until I’ve landed at something that properly works for me.

None of these are particularly what Russell is talking about, but the skeleton in there; code to drawing machine, code to PDF, backed by my own data and a bit of Kitty AI (although you could throw that AI part away).

I’ve also been doing some research into paper based “daybooks”, logbooks and ledgers that businesses used to use to track pretty much everything over hours, days, months and years well before digital came along.

All of which is to say, I think I agree with Russell, that there’s something in the space of paper based systems - that are dynamically created daily/weekly/monthly.

I love a good workbook, where I can sit somewhere cozy, with a pen and a drink (soda) and fill it in. A weekly workbook that was generated based on [criteria], both for corporations and individuals sounds great.

This is why I have Kitty interrupting my day to ask me what I’m doing; so it can be recorded.

This is why I’d love a printable/drawing-machine-able weekly workbook to fill in.

This is why I try and write this newsletter once every other week (and started another one: https://aaaaaahriso.substack.com/p/the-joys-of-under-construction), and make videos, etc. and why, when people confidently tell me they’re going to write a weekly newsletter I’m properly rooting for them, and wishing them well. But my goodness the practice of talking about what we do is hard.

So if someone could please make a local, on device AI, paper based, dynamically generated, personalised thing (and I’m okay with eInk too), I would love that thanks.

Even better if it can use a fountain pen, just to be fancy.

It’s a Delta WASP 40100, 3d clay printer, that reads GCODE, a.k.a. an X,Y,Z plotter that extrudes clay.

GCODE! GeeeeeeeeeCODE, specifically Marlin flavour for GCODE geeks.

I’ve been writing code that writes GCODE for the Bantam Tools ArtFrame for a while, including along the Z-axis. I also have a Drawing Machines 101 video sketched out all about working with polar co-ordinates; basically instead of thinking in x,y axis it’s working with rotation and distance from a central 0,0 point.

Circles, and spirals that go up, pretty much.

Something I really love is when artist share their knowledge about things they are both passionate about and have a deep understand of, so please say hello to Jonathan Keep who’s been making videos like this…

Jonathan works with Blender a lot, but also a bit of Processing here and there.

Meanwhile I’m more comfortable working with code, but I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a lot of trial and error before I get even anything as fancy as an ashtray done.

Speaking, kinda, of working in circles, Heft Gallery, has/had an exhibition called Circle - it was a project with a pretty tight deadline, and Adam asked some of your/my/our favourite artists to create a short series of artworks with the criteria a) a circle with a set inner and outer radius, b) based on some previously created work.

Pretty sure that second stipulation was to help speed things along by encouraging artist to reuse old code/resources rather than dive down new rabbit holes 🤔

I took my kaleidoscope code/logic which I’d been applying to pen plotter SVGs, and threw it at my FALLiNGWATER project, here’s three outputs.

The timing is such that the Heft Circle webpage didn’t exist when the last newsletter went out, and the 7-day window of the project being open means it closed a couple of days ago before this one. Although I’m pretty sure you can still buy one directly if you use the contact info at the bottom of the page, where you can also see all the circles created by the other artists.

The attempt-to-grow-flowers-to-make-natural-ink project continues; in that I keep throwing seeds into cells and pots, then move them into bigger pots and (hopefully) eventually out into the garden. I haven’t yet made any ink, and honestly since the crocuses the other month there’s been very few crushable flowers.

However I am enjoying spending the first hour or so of the day preparing for the rest of the day in the greenhouse.

Part of the whole seeds/seedlings/plants thing is having to harden them off. They’ve started off nice and snug and coddled in the greenhouse, and they’re destined to end up outside exposed to the elements. To make the transition easier they get put out each day to experience the hard realities of being in the big bad world, and brought back in at night - to protect them from, dunno, frosts, bats and weasels, perhaps 🤷‍♂️

Except today, when it HAILED, SO MUCH!

Obviously I’m being dramatic, and I’ve always loved people who make stuff like this; I like to think of them down in their workshop figuring out new puzzles and ummm, things - almost like crazy inventors. Thomas is therefore a legend; and somehow also made dot-to-dots good(er-ish).

I’m mainly annoyed that I didn’t realise selling the idea of the outline of something to publishers was somehow an option.

Hey publishers, if you want something like this, hit up the pen plotter community I’m sure there’s loads of fun stuff you can do beyond the AI slop colouring in books that seems to be filling the shelves.

# THE JOY OF DOING IT YOURSELF

The ‘joke’ I sometimes make — about using a drawing machine to take the tedium out of drawing — is that it’s wrong, of course.

Sometimes we want to do something slow and methodical, a break from everything else; solving a crossword, colouring squares in on one of those stupid colouring the squares in puzzles (that I don’t like), word searches, Sudoku, and for me, writing code.

Often these things aren’t hard, they’re a process we can go through and at the end, complete, satisfying.

There’s also this, which I’m sure you’ve probably seen some version of by now.

# BUILDING TOOLS & AI

I got asked about the UI in this photo the other day…

…which is an update to my “Minimal Viable Plotting Tool” that I first wrote about way back in newsletter #14 Works on my Machine, April 2023, just over three years ago.

The title there referencing that it’s a very different experience writing tools for your own use, taking your own very specific way of working and computer/hardware set-up into account, vs making it work for everyone else. Despite that, because I knew not everyone could write code, back then I made that code public on GitHub for anyone brave enough to try and use it.

We’ll come back to this in a moment.

Pen plotter artist gre recently published his tool for controlling his drawing machine; “Web interface for controlling an AxiDraw pen plotter from a Raspberry Pi.”

Which is different to mine, because of course gre has different requirements to me.

One of my requirements was that I should be able to see progress from the other side of the room, thus big round clear progress bars/circles.

Meanwhile targz wrote over on reddit, here’s a snapshot of part of it where he’s talking about using AI to link together all the tools he wants to use.

Much like my tool and gre’s tool, it’s primarily a UI over the top of various command line tools that make them work in a more intuitive/useful way, but each of these “apps” is clearly tuned to match the needs of each of us.

Back to my UI; in 2023 I put my code onto github so other people could attempt to install and use it, because I’m an artist who knew/knows how to code these things, and perhaps other people don’t, they just want to spin something up someone else has shared and use it.

Since then I’ve gotten more drawing machines and wanted to control them all from one UI, remotely, so I too threw AI* at it and basically went “take all this and update it”.

*currently a MacBook Pro M4 Max with 128Gb memory and all the cores, using Ollama, and (for the nerds) qwen3.6:35b-a3b-coding-mxfp8 for long running code tasks.

I could have updated the code myself, and I know how to update the code myself, but I’ve written this type of code hundreds of times before and I like the idea of computers actually doing stuff for me while I go eat lunch.

In reply to the person asking I said this (very permissively)…

Probably the most sensible thing to do is clone the repo, point AI at it and go “Work out what this code does, it’s overly complicated, I want something that allows me to simply and easily do...” - and then give it a list of what you’d want it to do and turn it onto your own personal tool.

Which is where I think we are with AI.

We don’t have to totally rely on someone else’s view of how a small tool should work, we can relatively easily spin up something that works for how we operate.

I want AI to do all the boring things I’ve done countless times before, unless, I feel like relaxing, getting into a flow state and tinkering.

However, I’d rather spent that flow state and tinkering writing code to make art, and I absolutely do not want AI to be involved in that process.

Kitty, my studio “AI PA” - absolutely does a bunch of boring metaphorical “laundry and dishes” around the studio, she does not get her paws on my art process (apart from those postcards that one time).

This person very kindly shared an app they’d made, a kinda of Swiss Army Knife of pen plotting tools, processes and goodies. Incredibly useful and handy for people trying to get into pen plotting.

As someone who’s freely shared code with the community, published projects where you can view the source code, where I’ve commented on the source code so people can look through and learn from it, and who’s making a whole damn series on YouTube about how to code for drawing machines, did my code get ‘dumped’ into the tool, did your code? Who knows, because they ‘honestly can’t remember’

I’ve always had a soft spot for this game, especially the procedurally generated landscapes, all 10,000 of them. So little system space to work with on those machines, and it not only managed to create landscapes that looked like art to 14 year old me, but also cleverly got harder the higher up the levels you went, while remaining playable/solvable.

I’d always wanted to recreate them so I could go revisit and explore without all the mild anxiety of playing the game. But a very early — and as it turns out incorrect — assumption about how the levels worked always put me off digging in further.

But with a four day Easter holiday weekend, a sense of adventure, slightly too much confidence, very rusty memory of the 6502 assembly language, and armed with both Mark’s detailed overview of the landscape generation algorithm: thesentinel.bbcelite.com/deep_dives/generating_the_landscape.html & source code: thesentinel.bbcelite.com/source/main/subroutine/generatelandscape.html I wrangled created the landscape inside my normal pen plotter tools.

The nice thing about old school 3d polygons that start at the back and draw over one another as you get closer to the “camera”, is that it’s fairly easy to convert it all into flat SVG polygons and lines that you can then (after running the nextdraw CLI hidden line removal command) send to the plotter.

I’ve been seeing a few pen plotted animations recently, the one from the start of last week’s newsletter, and the sequencefest show from a couple of newsletters before that, and I figured it was about time I had a go.

With all the pieces in place by the end of the holiday - picking landscapes from 1-9999, moving the “camera” to set up a shot, automating a looping fly-through or orbit; it didn’t take much to add in the ability to make it automatically export out X number of frame as SVG files from a loop, and scale them down to tile onto sheets of paper.

Then, shoot loads of photos.

To end up with an animation like this…

Here’s another “cell sheet” with 48 frames in 16:9 ratio…

…which I successfully turned into 48 slightly out of focus shots, so yeah, that’s going to have to wait until next week now, ffs.

Meanwhile, the ArtFrame is busy spending 14h 27m drawing the second half of a 64 frame animation on (for the paper nerds) an A1 sheet of delightful Bockingfords hotpressed 300gsm watercolour paper.

Next week I’m going to cut them up into postcards, number them (or number them, then cut them up, honestly I’m not sure the best way around to do that), take photos for the animation and then send them off to the Patreon members.

# ALMOST SHOP, RISO

As I’m sure any pen plotter artist who maintains a shop (here’s a few) will tell you, setting it up, keeping it maintained, adding things (paying fees), is a pain in the ass. Consequently I’m totally dragging my feet on this.

But I’m slowly getting my shit together, and things like the above postcards will end up in the shop if there’s any left once the post office has had the chance to fuck-up the very simple job of taking letters from A to B (unless B happens to be either the USA, Switzerland or Germany, in which case it’s apparently not a simple job at all 🤷‍♂️).

I’ve learnt to always plot/keep more than necessary incase I need to resend any; but now I have several from previous months sitting in a draw. Hopefully the tutorial-video 👉 patreon 👉 shop pipeline will flow nicely with about a month or two grace between each part.

Completely separate but kinda not, I’m still in the process of setting up the Riso Studio (a location across town from my own studio) as a place artists can drop in and try their hand at Riso printing, zine making and general print shenanigans. I helped someone Riso print part of their dissertation the other day, and that was very satisfying.

As part of all that I’m writing various tools to help with colour separation, generating previews of roughly what the Riso print will look like (turns out fluorescent pink doesn’t translate to screen RGB particularly well), and preparing files to print. Basically everything I can to make my, the studio and the artists’ lives as easy as possible.

There’s a good chance there’ll be a limited-ish edition of, ummmmm, 10,000 landscapes in pen plotted, riso printed or tradition printed formats, so if you happen to have a favourite landscape number that isn’t 0000 or 0001 then you may be in luck.

Nightmare; I’m going to be starting a Riso substack newsletter soon, which’ll be in the alternating Thursday slot that this one isn’t. Thankfully co-riso-studio-owner Clare and I have agreed that rather than write it together, which would never work, we’re going to take it in turns.

I suspect mine will be the more sweary version. On the one hand, oh fuck I’m committing to writing even more, on the other it’s only 12-13 times a year, which doesn’t sound so bad when I put it like that.

Double Nightmare; I’m doing more and more stuff in the “Culture, Archives and Museums Vertical” — and as you can tell — I’m already practicing for the inevitable LinkedIn-ing I’m going to have to do for that.

Perhaps I’m somehow naturally drawn to threes, as I now appear to have three roles; Drawing Machine Artist, Riso Studio Owner, and Digital Legacy Death Doula (no, your children do no want to inherit 63,427 (excluding duplicates) photos spread across several services).

If someone said “Wow Dan, you’ve done a really good job of diversifying income streams, like wot those $97 how to be an influencer courses say you should do” - I would say; yes - diversified, no to the income part 😬

LOVE this icosahedron plotted by Dave Mawer, onto four layers of tracing paper. We’ve been seeing a lot* of animated plotter drawings recently, but this method of - I assume - using the z-axis to decide which layer of paper to plot onto adds another dimension.

Meanwhile, LB ALLIX (IG) made this, and the sheer chunkiness of it makes me smile.

Tiny jam jars are great for adding weight to pens, but this custom 3d print is probably far more practical and allows you to adjust the weight by adding more or less nuts to the nut caddy.

# VPYPE, BUT NICE

vpype is correctly self described as “the Swiss-Army-knife command-line tool for plotter vector graphics.” and will solve a lot of your pen plotting troubles, so it’s worth getting to grips with.

However, sometimes you just want to do the most common optimising tasks with little fuss.

Draw Scape (IG) - who has a lot of experience dealing with kind of thing - has you covered with a web tool that handles the most common use cases.

# HEXAGON PEN HOLDERS

Those with long memories may remember a project called “Hexagones Landscape” [sic] that released on fxhash back in November 2022. It looked a bit like this…

Well, apparently a side project of mine is making pen holders. Because I always have a lot of pens kicking around, and the most efficient way of keeping them ready to go while taking up minimal space is to store the vertically. Here’s some I made to hold TWSBI Eco pens.

Now I need to do the same for my Pentel brush pens that are scattered all over the place, here’s an v.2 that allows you to both hold pens and create your own hexagon landscape.

v.3 was fun, but not practical…

…and v.4 is about to be sent to be printed next, so we’ll see how that goes.

# DARK FOREST OS

Last time I said I’d write about DFOS, and I had a few emails from people saying they were interested in hearing more.

Sadly, I haven’t had a chance to play with it much more since last time. The plan was to use it some more, set up a few things, have some content there so it’s not a ghost town, then finally send out invite links.

That and I’m waiting for a couple more features to be rolled out, that I think really need to be there to make the whole thing a lot easier for people, before really going to town with it.

Hopefully I’ll have more of an update, and an invite link either next newsletter or the one after.

# DRAWING MACHINES 101

Two more videos since last time, I wanted these to go out at the same time as they work well back-to-back.

For a lot of people who already know a bit of code, those two are going to be all you need to get up and running writing code to make your own SVG files.

I think the second one also does a good job of showing that you don’t need much code to start to do interesting things, and the code is only half of it. With different paper, pens and even moving the machine around (sometimes while it plots) you can take some simple lines quite far.

I also uploaded the March Patreon Q&A video, which answers a bunch of questions. Even if you don’t watch the whole thing, I like the longer answer about how to get yourself into an idea creating mindset at 01:44 and the brush pen plotting at 18:52.

I’ve finally reached the virtuous circle of creating pen plots during the making of the tutorials, which’ll form the basis of what I send out to the Patreon supporters. Getting systems and processes in place is often a hard slog, but it’s nice when it finally pays off.

LAMY, which I know a bunch of you use, have the popular SAFARI fountain pen, just introduced the SAFARI Roll-Ink, which is a rollerball pen that takes the BLUE T10 ink cartridge from the fountain pen; but not the ink convertor, nor do they recommend any of the other ink cartridges.

So fuck that right, I washed out the cartridge and replaced the ink with iroshizuku to-ro ink, and so far, it’s worked just fine.

2,700 is how many small “tally” marks I could draw on an A3 sheet without the ink running out.

But around 50 is the limit if they are big chunky brush stroke.

Or rather, when I say “limit” I mean the point at which I’d like to stop the drawing machine and top up the ink in the brush pen. One trick I was using was to randomise the drawing order of the lines, so the change between freshly topped up ink strokes, and drying out brush strokes wasn’t so obvious - or at least looked more intentional.

Which I guess they were.

The above images are fine, but what I really just wanted to do, was lots of repeating brush strokes on a large sheet of paper. No stupid in a circle stuff, no groups of five “tally” marks. Just one brush stroke after the another until a whole page was full.

Stopping every 50 marks or so to top-up the ink, but hey, why not keep changing the ink colour each time you top it up, so the colours gradually change from one to the next?

Until the whole sheet is filled.

# PATREON

This is all part of the “oh shit, there’s a send out postcards Patreon level, and I’m still not at the creating pen plots as part of the Drawing Machines 101 tutorial videos, so I have to do something else until we get there” stage.

Don’t get me wrong, I love making the postcards (and larger) pen plots to send out, but as previously mentioned the idea is the video and postcard making are supposed to be the same thing in a super time efficient feedback loop 😁

Meanwhile, each time I make these extra specifically for Patreon plots I want to make a video explaining the process - instead I’m just adding it to the list of fun videos I’ll go back and make once everything is all over.

Needless to say there’s a nice backlog of potential videos building up.

Anyway, the short version is, I loved the whole-page-being-filled version so much that another tweak of the code later and I had it calculating the gaps to leave to I could cut the page up into postcards, and even the trim marks to make the whole thing easier.

My favorite part is these are basically just simple lines, the maths is easy, draw a single line from point A to point B, do it again and again and again and again and again and AGAIN.

The brush and the ink is doing all the work here.

Oh, and these all got posted out yesterday, making this the worst Patreon self-promotion ever, but I guess there’s always next month.

There’s a show, “sequencefest”, it’s run by Bantam Tools, it’s in their gallery in Peekskill, NY (135 N. Water Street, Peekskills, NY 10566 - to be precise), it features; James Merrill (who created the animation above), Nat Sarkissian, Nima Nabavi and Bre Pettis; you can probably buy shit, it opens on Friday the 13th (lucky!!) at 5:30pm, “Artists will be present the following day in the gallery on March 14” - and it runs until fuck knows when, because apparently we don’t put useful information like that on websites anymore; maybe I’m just old and people don’t care about end dates now, is that fashion? Is it open-ended? Is it a two day affair? Who knows, it remains a fricking mystery.

Sequencefest is an exhibition of animated works, bringing together four distinct voices in generative and motion-based art, exploring plotted movement, digital animation, and screen-based storytelling within a physical gallery environment.

Animations will be shown on screens throughout the space and will also be available for purchase. Select works will be offered as framed 18 x 24 pieces, with additional editions available in accessible card and mat formats.

As I’ve mentioned a few times before, that, in theory Module 1 of Drawing Machines 101 would be consumed all in one go - once the last couple of module 1 videos are done it’ll clock in at around 1h 30m - which, if you were sitting down for a class at college or Uni, would be a reasonable Something 101 introduction session.

So I imagine it’s still a little weird for people following along in real time, having a new short video popping up once every few days; but this’ll stop being an issue soon enough I guess once I publish the next two.

Now and then I’ll see someone posting the question “Where can I buy some pen plotter art?” - often over on reddit r/plotterart - and I assume half the time it’s someone doing research into how much to charge for art (not a bad idea tbh).

There’s normally a couple of replies.

Meanwhile over on Instagram there’s a few “Links in bio” - which is great when you land on an artist you like and they have some links and one of them is a shop - but not so great when you just want to go shopping.

‘Cause I also wanted to keep track of who has a YouTube channel, or a newsletter too, I figured I’d just very fucking slowly build a hand crafted directory.

Definitely not a “best of”, the order is randomised (something I’m going to have to deal with when I hit enough entries for there to be pagination), and I’m focusing first on artists with shops, but it’s a start.

It’s also a very low priority, but it’s nice to have something I can tinker with when I have 30mins spare here or there. Going off to track down another artist with a shop and adding them is a fun way to spend an evening.

I’m going to be honest with you; there are times I just want to grab my laptop & a reasonable sized drawing machine, head off into a workshop in the woods and just make art.

No videos, no “content” for social media, no websites, no directories, no work - just endless days, weeks, months of going through my sketchbooks and notes and making art to my heart’s content.

But, I think the world is a better place for these things in it; the video course, tutorials, books, blog posts, and so on. Every time I see someone creating a book, preparing something for a show, teaching a workshop, helping other people, I think about how they’re making a decision to set aside time they could be making art to do that instead.

What I didn’t realise is what a blessing decided to post out monthly art on Patreon was (this isn’t a shill btw, although it may sound like that). My current aim is to keep bashing through the tutorial videos until they’re all done, I’m looking down the barrel of months and months of work.

I thought that the Patreon was another thing for other people, but it turns out making the Riso prints last month, the asemic writing the month before, and the POSCA dots before that have been a lifeline each month, a short two-three week project that I have to do.

I expect it’s the same for people doing daily (and dailyish) work. It can’t be perfect, and you have to move on, but oh boy do you have fun crunching through ideas.

Having the Patreon has forced me to set aside time from making the videos to make art, and without it I’d probably lose the plot 😁

This month, fwiw, is going to be something like this, but different, but the same…

# PEN & PAPER | DRAWING MACHINE 101

Finally got my shit together and hit publish on video #3 in the Drawing Machine 101 series; we’re still in the introduction and setup stage, the coding happens in a few videos’ time.

One of my favourite things, is to watch videos where people are making or doing something fairly niche, but which is new to them. The person is competent and I learn from watching them, but then diving into the comments gives you even more hints & tips as people made suggestions on how to do things better (or even sometimes “properly”).

Katherine’s channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Nelferch is a) wonderful and b) a good example of people always giving advice on whatever she’s doing.

And I’m not even being snarky (honest); I’m not yet painting the walls of a barn, or restoring a Land Rover, or building a greenhouse, but there’s always some top tips down in the comments if I were ever going to do some of those things.

So I’m very pleased to see the comments on my video are already filling up with better pen & ink suggestions than I made, and pretty sure will continue to do so for years to come 😁

One of the ideas behind the Patreon; where people can support the making of the Drawing Machines 101 videos (I want them to be free & they take a bunch of time and resources to make, I’m fine with taking that on, but people supporting takes the edge of that a bit), is that I send out artwork each month.

To keep myself sane and not burning out, the things I post out each month are supposed to be created in the process of making the videos.

However, while we’re still in the introduction videos phase I’m not actually making plots, so for the first few months I’ve been doing fun extra things. This month has been Riso prints based a custom code variant of the “80s Pop Roxy 🍿” project, which in turn is based on the “70s Pop” pen plots.

While I’m looking forwards to everything coming together in virtuous cycles: making videos supports the patreon, the patreon supports making videos; I’m enjoying a second feedback loop of trying to learn how to use the Riso machine while setting up the Riso studio, and getting to send off the results.

One day the Venn Diagram of all the things I’m doing will hopefully become nearly a fully overlapping circle.

I have a headache, I should probably drink more water but I don’t want to, my glasses feel like an enemy, I can see the words on the screen clearly but everything else around the edge of my vision smears sickeningly.

I have a newsletter to write today otherwise tomorrow is screwed, which fucks up Friday, but we’re only about 10% of the way through the year, plenty of time to catch up.

Thankfully posted the below to her IG stories the other day, which got me thinking, and was going to make this whole thing a lot easier.

# A SIDE NOTE ON PROCESS

I got up at 6am, went through the morning routine, got my shit together, grabbed my phone to put some music on, and just before heading out the door opened Instagram on my laptop and saw the story posted above.

I had thoughts, so I grabbed my Sony dictaphone, and in pretty much a stream of consciousness spoke them out as I walked the 25mins to the studio. A few days worth of audio notes had built up, mostly around ideas for the next newsletter, so I finally plugged it into the computer and told the AI to deal with it.

You don’t need to read the text in the screenshot below, there’s honestly too much for too little payoff, but I thought some people may be interested in the process.

I don’t use AI to help me write these newsletters (which is probably obvious) - I even stopped using Grammerly when they started shoving too much AI into it - I liked it telling me when to add or remove commas and stick in a semi-colon; I didn’t like it suggesting I re-write whole paragraphs or asking me if I need help getting started.

I do use AI to transcribe my voice notes and update Obsidian with what I’ve asked it to update my notes with 😁

I’ve designed it so I can only add one image per post → title, body text, image → as some sort of constraint I thought was a good idea at the time. I’m mentioning it here because I was asked if I could add an RSS/Atom feed to it, so I did, right down at the bottom of the pages (that don’t infinitely scroll).

There’s another reason for doing this which is connected to archives and archiving, but that’s for another time.

I also added RSS and Atom feeds to a bunch of other places on the website too, ‘cause I now have the code so why not.

It’s Thursday morning, I gave up on yesterday at around 2pm with a stupid headache, I’m now sat in the Riso studio trying out some ideas based on my 80s Pop Roxy project. I’m sure all those photos will turn up in the newsletter next time.

Which, according to block universe theory will be on Thursday the 19th of February.

It has, as always, been an absolute delight talking to you, even with the headache stuff, I’m really looking forwards to the part of 2026 where things start to get better, any time now!

*Not in a bad way; in that all of my art is work, and my brain is swapping out the “dance” for Interesting.

So I can imagine standing on the stage and the audience going “We didn’t come here for (your work) art, we only came here for Interesting things”; or, from last year, robot dancing.

What can I say, I’m not entirely sure my brain is working right and this is all a fever dream.

After googling the cooking temperature of living human flesh I decided to turn the settings down a couple of notches. My feet were tingling and my liver and kidneys were feeling uncomfortably hot.

I was wearing heated socks, trousers and gilet for the first time, the cold was banished apart from the tips of my fingers and nose, while the rest of me was feeling perhaps a little too toasty.

# STAYING OPERATIONAL AT 2℃/35℉

There’s no heating here in the art studio, and there’s no point trying to heat the room as it’s open to the kitchen area and the stairs, which lead to the rest of the building and outside. To heat the studio is to heat the whole of Shrewsbury.

Last year I got a heated blanket and heated shawl, which were great, but they plugged into a socket which left me somewhat tethered, even with the extension cable.

This year when I looked there were a lot more heated things (like the socks, trousers, gloves, hats and jackets) which were powered from batteries with USB-C.

You charged the battery up, plugged it in, popped it into a small pocket and moved around freely. Which is great, but lasted about three hours, and I’m in the studio from around 8am to 6pm, 10 hours.

And so the battery rotation station came into existence, some 3d printing and a couple of extra batteries for each item and I was good to go.

Now in the morning I put all the heated clothing on, set a timer for 3 hours, and get on with making art. After 3 hours I switch to the next battery, and so on. Each time the next battery is fully charged by the time I get back around to it.

Turns out the high temperature settings are great for a short burst, but as my quick bit of research discovered, 10 hours a day at max setting would slowly cook my insides

Interestingly I discovered the top choice, the Uni Jetstream, just before the holidays when looking for some colourful lightfast pens - they’re not all lightfast, but the main colours are (although I need to go back and get an exact list), which is a great find for reliable, colourful pens that won’t fade.

I agree with “The Best White Gel Pen for Art: Uni-ball Signo White Gel Pen” - which I find a bit better than the Sakura Gelly Roll.

Other favorites like the Uni-ball Signo UM-151 Gel Pen and TWSBI Eco fountain pen are also on the list.

But if you want pens for drawing machines, the whole list is an amazing place to start.

When I was a kid there was a TV program called “The Adventure Game”, each episode (from series 2 onwards) ended with The Vortex.

The game was played on a triangle/hex lattice (3-4-3-4-3-4-3), with the celebrity player, often a children’s tv presenter, at one side and the “vortex” at the other, which was invisible to the player. They’d take it in turns to move, and if they player moved into the vortex’s space they were eliminated.

Obviously with the vortex being invisible this was somewhat a game of chance, but it did allow me to divide tv celebrities into those who were cool, and those who clearly didn’t fucking understand game theory, probability, and optimising a statistically correct strategy.

No Keith No! Don’t move to that spot on the very edge, now you’ve limited the number of viable next moves and reduced your chances of winning. Oh God, he’s moved backwards, the twat!

And that’s how Keith Chegwin got sucked off by the vortex! This would never have happened to Maggie Philbin*.

I was 9 at the time, and not yet diagnosed with autism, but the signs were there.

# MAKING COHERENT BRUSH STROKES

I’ve been plotting my postcards for the #ptpx2025 Pen Plotter Postcard Exchange, with (sometimes) fancy ink, brush pens and the ArtFrame drawing machine, which allows me to control the height of the brush using the magic of GCODE.

I wanted to share a little of the behind the scenes on this one ‘cause I think it’s fun. Here’s an image to get started, it’s my own mini version of the Vortex!

The “game” is to generate nice sweeping brushstrokes that start at the top of the page/design and swoosh their way generally down. So here are the rules…

• Randomly start at either position 0, 1, or 2.

• Each “turn” you have a 10% chance of moving up, 20% chance of moving sideways and 70% chance of moving down. If you can’t move up, roll again. If there’s more than one option to move sideways or move down, flip a coin to see which way you go.

• When you reach the bottom, take one more turn then end the “game”.

• If there’s less than 8 points in the final path, throw it away and start over.

This gives us a “random walk” that always starts at the top, and will eventually make it’s way to the bottom. Because they’re all based on the same underlying lattice/substrate they’ll be consistent.

Next stage, throw in a pendulum.

Ignore the complicated one on the right for the moment.

Imagine a single point at the top of the page, and attach a pendulum that swings back and forth (and attach a pen to that pendulum). The pen would swoosh back and forth drawing an arc over and over until it rips through the paper (bad).

Imagine a second point near the bottom of the page, and now let the pendulum’s pivot point slowly move from the top to the bottom, while swinging back and forth. You’d end up with back and forth swooshes going down the page (better, but boring).

Now, much harder to imagine, but thankfully pretty easy to code, a pendulum that swings back and forth, as the pivot point it’s attached to slowly moves along the path we created.

Here’s the complicated one from above, with all the points along the path. BUT, an added rule; as the brush/line moves downwards the line gets thicker (and on the drawing machine we move the brush closer to the paper), and as we move upwards the line gets thinner (we move the brush away from the paper).

You’ll probably have noticed there’s actually two lines 🤔

This is because I want the main black line, and then a “sympathetic” supporting coloured line. The two lines are created by starting two pendulums at slightly different angles & swinging at slightly different speeds.

They’ll slowly move out of sync as it moves towards the end of the design, but because they follow the same path they’ll be in roughly the same area (as opposed to both lines doing their own thing).

# INK

I need to get Kitty to write on some of these and then get them into the post. I have, of course, plotted far too many so I’m going to be sending extra ones out over the next few months, and Patreon.

I figured someone may find this useful, I do for a couple of reasons I’ll note below, it looks a lot like this…

# VISUAL & TACTILE

Whenever I’m feeling lost or overwhelmed I write things down on index cards, stick them on the table and rearrange them until everything start to make sense. It could be tasks in a project, or todo items to get done throughout the week. Working on screen just doesn’t help, I need to see the bigger picture.

One sticking point has been planning out when to schedule things throughout the month.

This one was me figuring out when to post updates to the Patreon. I know the 1st is for saying what the plan is for the month, the 3rd Wednesday is for sending post out, which means the next day is Q&A post, with answers at the end of the month.

I wanted four updates on the project and saw how the 3rd one was going to fall the day before the newsletter, so better make it a “mini” one to not give myself too much to do.

When figuring out how to fit everything in I’ll often have several index card calendars on the desk, each for different things; I find looking at them so much easier than on-screen digital views.

I also find there’s something limiting about having just one shop bought calendar, with the need to get everything final-and-right on your single chance to get everything final-and-right month view page.

Having disposable (recyclable) index cards reduces friction.

Something I’ve found handy when working with a team is sending a large A1 month plot to the drawing machine, then mapping out project tasks using post-it notes or coloured index cards (or coloured beads and counters). Which I just can’t do (easily) with a normal printer.

Other times, a couple of index cards propped up on the desk and one tucked into my notebook have been a life-saver.

# KITTY & CODE

The link (https://revdancatt.com/calendar/) is a bit of a hack tbh. Normally I just tell Kitty (my AI PA) to plot out a calendar using the NextDraw she’s wired up to, and the Kitty backend is written in NodeJS.

The handwriting is really a webservice that runs on my laptop, where I (or Kitty) can POST some text to it (often addresses for envelopes, or daily todo lists) and get some SVG back.

But while I’m happy to have that running on my laptop, I’m not totally sure I want to put Kitty’s handwriting API out there on the web.

So what I’ve done is convert a whole bunch of the NodeJS backend SVG generating code into frontend javascript, pre-generated a few hundred variations of each month, day, year and numbers 1 to 31, and replaced what would have been a call to the API with loading up a random variation.

It’s a weird work-around, but gets the job done.

I also put up the code for this calendar thing so people can run it locally over on patreon, but I think you have to sign up to grab it. But so far I’ve found it to be one of the better ways of sharing code that isn’t GitHub.

# ADVENTURES IN DITHERING

Dithering and chunky pixels are nostalgia for old digital screens.

Halftone patterns and dots are nostalgia for old print.

Feels like a fairly uncontroversial statement.

And I’m all about the print, so halftones for me, but, ugh, I backed myself into a corner.

## POSCA

I have a box full of POSCA acrylic paint pens. I bought them ages ago thinking they’d be great for drawing on black paper with the pen plotter, I was so wrong. Let’s take a closer look at the pens…

…yeah, you need to shake them before use, fine. Then “pump” them several times to get the ink to flow, also fine; but you have to keep doing that repeatedly throughout the plot or else they dry up. Which is tricky when they’re strapped into the machine.

However, I’ve been getting the ArtFrame to use rubber stamps & ‘cause it uses GCODE, you can use that GCODE to SLAM whatever it’s holding down as fast at possible.

Which got me thinking, why not write the code so the machine draws some lines, and then after a certain distance moves the pen onto some sacrificial paper, in a corner somewhere, z-index the fuck out of it, repeatedly SLAMMING it up and down several times, before going back to drawing.

And as we saw last newsletter with the dots, I ended up decided the whole thing should just be dots/pumping the pen, so it’s always primed with paint/ink.

That’s one half of the halftone equation done.

## HALFTONE

Wikipedia sez

Basically you can create the appearance of shade by varying the size of dots on a grid, shown above a hexgrid. Below, mixing CYMK dots at various sizes to make different colours.

That’s fine, but I have pens, those pens have nibs, and those nibs make 2mm dots.

THUD, THUD, THUD, DOT, DOT, DOT.

2mm, no more, no less. I either have a dot or no dot.

So I can’t halftone with different sized dots, but I can dither. But I don’t want a chunky pixel square grid dither, ‘cause that’s for screens and retro games, I want print, so I want to use a hexgrid, now to escape the corner I’ve painted myself into.

## HEX DITHERING

The trick to dithering is knowing which pixels or dots to turn on and off. The links above show there’s several ways of doing this, but I like to keep things simple, so here’s a grid of 12 dots…

We’ll get onto why they’re numbered like that in just a moment.

First thing to note though is we can repeat this group of 12 dots over and over to fill in the whole page, I’ve coloured them to make it easier to see.

So what happens if we turn off dot number 11? We get this…

We’ll make it easier to see the whole pattern by turning all the dots to black, and switching half of them off.

The trick to shading is pretty simple. We take an image, turn it greyscale, and then at any particular point work out what the grey value is on a scale of 0-12.

12 is light (pure white), and 0 is dark (pure black).

Then we turn off any dots under that value. So if something is pure white (12), we turn off all the dots that are less than 12, i.e. all of them. If it’s black we turn off all the dots under 0; none of them.

If it’s light grey, say 9, we turn off all the dots under 9, leaving just the 9, 10 & 11 dots.

If it’s dark grey, 3, we turn off all the dots under 3, keeping all the dots numbered 3 to 11.

The dots are numbered in such a way that the pattern remains “interesting” as you remove dots. There’s better ways (the 10th and 11th dots are too closely aligned for my liking), but this is quick & dirty and good enough, shown below is a gradient of all 13 “shades”. Note: the “grid” is rotated about 40° counter-clockwise here.

So now instead of getting a halftone effect by changing the size of the dot, we can use hex-dithering instead. If we take an original image and split it into separate CMYK channels, convert each channel to greyscale, then plot using a different rotation angle for each layer, we get something like this (I threw the black channel away)…

While writing this newsletter I found this set of posts about applying error diffusion to a hex grid: https://loomsci.wordpress.com/tag/error-diffusion/ - which is probably the closest to this, as they’re using hexagon “pixels” of a set size, so they can only vary colour (and in some experiments shade).

This paper also uses error diffusion on a hexagonal grid.

I can see this was posted back in 2019 which at least has the tag ‘penplot’ and mentions pens and dots, but I don’t see any actual pen plots done with it.

So I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest this is the world’s first hexagonal order dithering with a threshold map of 12 levels, multi-coloured pen plot. It doesn’t take much to be the world’s first at something, you just need to narrow the criteria down a lot 😁

Spotify can go get wrecked, obviously.

I mean it’s probably more nuanced than that; it’s great for listeners and AI warfare, but bad for artists and AI warfare, and so the reality is probably somewhere between those two points.

Back in ‘23 to go along with my Alba FALLiNGWATER project, I made a Spotify playlist of music I was listening to while developing it, and the type of music that created the type of album art I was inspired by.

For me music & art are very closely aligned, and I pretty much always have a “mixtape” in mind that goes along with a project, with FALLiNGWATER I took the extra (mild) step of publishing it.

[Pretend there’s an insightful paragraph here about how people are turning away from digital services & subscriptions and embracing physical media - etc. etc. you know the drill, it’s all over the place at the moment, certainly doesn’t need to be here too! Oh, add an extra bit about piracy 🏴‍☠️]

IKR, nailed it!!

In short, I started exfiltrating various playlists onto bootleg mixtapes.

FALLiNGWATER was almost perfect for this, 1h 25min fits nicely onto a C90.

I could go into the art of the car drive mixtape; you gotta know how long it’s going to take to get there and back.

18-22mins each way = 45min mix tape. Around 45min each way = C90. Any longer and you may have to burn two CD-Rs, one for going out, and the other for coming back.

Going out is your battle music, coming back is chill out.

Which is how the FALLiNGWATER playlist was built. Unfortunately when putting it onto tape I couldn’t quite split the tracks nicely and Offshore by Chicane had to tuck onto the end of side A, rather than at the start of side B where it belongs. Can’t have everything I guess.

A-Side runs at 43:46, B-Side is 41:29.

When the combination of inside temperature, outside temperature, number of plays, distance travelled, the moon & the mood is right the car will eat the tape, as it should; it is foretold.

# PATREON CORNER

I opened up my Patreon kinda at the wrong time, the start of the month would have been better but we don’t always get to choose.

The idea behind it is two-fold; first it’s somewhere I can put the Drawing Machine 101 videos where YouTube doesn’t throw adverts on them. I have more thoughts about that, but I’ll save them for another time.

The second is having a good place to interact with people that isn’t just shouting into the void. I’ve heard the phrase “PATREON IS MY OFFICE HOURS” - which stuck with me; I can’t always reply on social media, or YouTube comments, or here, but I CAN always do that over at Patreon. But that’s also thoughts-for-another-time.

The main things it does is give me; a good way to send physical art out to people and a schedule! This is that schedule…

Basically, the first ⅔ of the month is making and documenting things, and the second ⅓ is Q&A stuff.

Around the 3rd Wednesday of the month the things get shipped out, and the day after we open the Q&A post for questions, with the answers getting posted in video form at the end of the month.

This month we jumped right into the middle with things getting shipped pretty much right away on the theme of DOTS.

At the start of the month I post the theme for the month and we go through the whole thing again, with the Drawing Machine 101 videos posted as and when I finish editing them.

Next month’s theme carries on with DOTS, but also DITHERING…

I’ve already had a quick (failed) attempt. The failure was both the green pen running out and there being too much paint for the paper to handle.

Sometimes people ask me how I get everything done and the answer is pretty much; timeblocking/timeboxing, good sleep and a friendly AI assistant that can’t be bargained with, can’t be reasoned with. Doesn’t feel pity! Or remorse or fear and absolutely will not stop!... ever... until I am dead!
