I’ve always had a soft spot for this game, especially the procedurally generated landscapes, all 10,000 of them. So little system space to work with on those machines, and it not only managed to create landscapes that looked like art to 14 year old me, but also cleverly got harder the higher up the levels you went, while remaining playable/solvable.

I’d always wanted to recreate them so I could go revisit and explore without all the mild anxiety of playing the game. But a very early — and as it turns out incorrect — assumption about how the levels worked always put me off digging in further.

But with a four day Easter holiday weekend, a sense of adventure, slightly too much confidence, very rusty memory of the 6502 assembly language, and armed with both Mark’s detailed overview of the landscape generation algorithm: thesentinel.bbcelite.com/deep_dives/generating_the_landscape.html & source code: thesentinel.bbcelite.com/source/main/subroutine/generatelandscape.html I wrangled created the landscape inside my normal pen plotter tools.

The nice thing about old school 3d polygons that start at the back and draw over one another as you get closer to the “camera”, is that it’s fairly easy to convert it all into flat SVG polygons and lines that you can then (after running the nextdraw CLI hidden line removal command) send to the plotter.

# GET ANIMATED

I’ve been seeing a few pen plotted animations recently, the one from the start of last week’s newsletter, and the sequencefest show from a couple of newsletters before that, and I figured it was about time I had a go.

With all the pieces in place by the end of the holiday - picking landscapes from 1-9999, moving the “camera” to set up a shot, automating a looping fly-through or orbit; it didn’t take much to add in the ability to make it automatically export out X number of frame as SVG files from a loop, and scale them down to tile onto sheets of paper.

Then, shoot loads of photos.

To end up with an animation like this…

…which I successfully turned into 48 slightly out of focus shots, so yeah, that’s going to have to wait until next week now, ffs.

Meanwhile, the ArtFrame is busy spending 14h 27m drawing the second half of a 64 frame animation on (for the paper nerds) an A1 sheet of delightful Bockingfords hotpressed 300gsm watercolour paper.

Next week I’m going to cut them up into postcards, number them (or number them, then cut them up, honestly I’m not sure the best way around to do that), take photos for the animation and then send them off to the Patreon members.

# ALMOST SHOP, RISO

As I’m sure any pen plotter artist who maintains a shop (here’s a few) will tell you, setting it up, keeping it maintained, adding things (paying fees), is a pain in the ass. Consequently I’m totally dragging my feet on this.

But I’m slowly getting my shit together, and things like the above postcards will end up in the shop if there’s any left once the post office has had the chance to fuck-up the very simple job of taking letters from A to B (unless B happens to be either the USA, Switzerland or Germany, in which case it’s apparently not a simple job at all 🤷‍♂️).

I’ve learnt to always plot/keep more than necessary incase I need to resend any; but now I have several from previous months sitting in a draw. Hopefully the tutorial-video 👉 patreon 👉 shop pipeline will flow nicely with about a month or two grace between each part.

Completely separate but kinda not, I’m still in the process of setting up the Riso Studio (a location across town from my own studio) as a place artists can drop in and try their hand at Riso printing, zine making and general print shenanigans. I helped someone Riso print part of their dissertation the other day, and that was very satisfying.

As part of all that I’m writing various tools to help with colour separation, generating previews of roughly what the Riso print will look like (turns out fluorescent pink doesn’t translate to screen RGB particularly well), and preparing files to print. Basically everything I can to make my, the studio and the artists’ lives as easy as possible.

There’s a good chance there’ll be a limited-ish edition of, ummmmm, 10,000 landscapes in pen plotted, riso printed or tradition printed formats, so if you happen to have a favourite landscape number that isn’t 0000 or 0001 then you may be in luck.

Nightmare; I’m going to be starting a Riso substack newsletter soon, which’ll be in the alternating Thursday slot that this one isn’t. Thankfully co-riso-studio-owner Clare and I have agreed that rather than write it together, which would never work, we’re going to take it in turns.

I suspect mine will be the more sweary version. On the one hand, oh fuck I’m committing to writing even more, on the other it’s only 12-13 times a year, which doesn’t sound so bad when I put it like that.

Double Nightmare; I’m doing more and more stuff in the “Culture, Archives and Museums Vertical” — and as you can tell — I’m already practicing for the inevitable LinkedIn-ing I’m going to have to do for that.

Perhaps I’m somehow naturally drawn to threes, as I now appear to have three roles; Drawing Machine Artist, Riso Studio Owner, and Digital Legacy Death Doula (no, your children do no want to inherit 63,427 (excluding duplicates) photos spread across several services).

If someone said “Wow Dan, you’ve done a really good job of diversifying income streams, like wot those $97 how to be an influencer courses say you should do” - I would say; yes - diversified, no to the income part 😬

LOVE this icosahedron plotted by Dave Mawer, onto four layers of tracing paper. We’ve been seeing a lot* of animated plotter drawings recently, but this method of - I assume - using the z-axis to decide which layer of paper to plot onto adds another dimension.

Meanwhile, LB ALLIX (IG) made this, and the sheer chunkiness of it makes me smile.

Tiny jam jars are great for adding weight to pens, but this custom 3d print is probably far more practical and allows you to adjust the weight by adding more or less nuts to the nut caddy.

# VPYPE, BUT NICE

vpype is correctly self described as “the Swiss-Army-knife command-line tool for plotter vector graphics.” and will solve a lot of your pen plotting troubles, so it’s worth getting to grips with.

However, sometimes you just want to do the most common optimising tasks with little fuss.

Draw Scape (IG) - who has a lot of experience dealing with kind of thing - has you covered with a web tool that handles the most common use cases.

Also handy that it shows you the commands so you can (eventually) figure out how to do it yourself.

# HEXAGON PEN HOLDERS

Those with long memories may remember a project called “Hexagones Landscape” [sic] that released on fxhash back in November 2022. It looked a bit like this…

Well, apparently a side project of mine is making pen holders. Because I always have a lot of pens kicking around, and the most efficient way of keeping them ready to go while taking up minimal space is to store the vertically. Here’s some I made to hold TWSBI Eco pens.

Now I need to do the same for my Pentel brush pens that are scattered all over the place, here’s an v.2 that allows you to both hold pens and create your own hexagon landscape.

v.3 was fun, but not practical…

…and v.4 is about to be sent to be printed next, so we’ll see how that goes.

# DARK FOREST OS

Last time I said I’d write about DFOS, and I had a few emails from people saying they were interested in hearing more.

Sadly, I haven’t had a chance to play with it much more since last time. The plan was to use it some more, set up a few things, have some content there so it’s not a ghost town, then finally send out invite links.

That and I’m waiting for a couple more features to be rolled out, that I think really need to be there to make the whole thing a lot easier for people, before really going to town with it.

Hopefully I’ll have more of an update, and an invite link either next newsletter or the one after.

# DRAWING MACHINES 101

Two more videos since last time, I wanted these to go out at the same time as they work well back-to-back.

For a lot of people who already know a bit of code, those two are going to be all you need to get up and running writing code to make your own SVG files.

I think the second one also does a good job of showing that you don’t need much code to start to do interesting things, and the code is only half of it. With different paper, pens and even moving the machine around (sometimes while it plots) you can take some simple lines quite far.

I also uploaded the March Patreon Q&A video, which answers a bunch of questions. Even if you don’t watch the whole thing, I like the longer answer about how to get yourself into an idea creating mindset at 01:44 and the brush pen plotting at 18:52.

I’ve finally reached the virtuous circle of creating pen plots during the making of the tutorials, which’ll form the basis of what I send out to the Patreon supporters. Getting systems and processes in place is often a hard slog, but it’s nice when it finally pays off.

LAMY, which I know a bunch of you use, have the popular SAFARI fountain pen, just introduced the SAFARI Roll-Ink, which is a rollerball pen that takes the BLUE T10 ink cartridge from the fountain pen; but not the ink convertor, nor do they recommend any of the other ink cartridges.

So fuck that right, I washed out the cartridge and replaced the ink with iroshizuku to-ro ink, and so far, it’s worked just fine.

2,700 is how many small “tally” marks I could draw on an A3 sheet without the ink running out.

But around 50 is the limit if they are big chunky brush stroke.

Or rather, when I say “limit” I mean the point at which I’d like to stop the drawing machine and top up the ink in the brush pen. One trick I was using was to randomise the drawing order of the lines, so the change between freshly topped up ink strokes, and drying out brush strokes wasn’t so obvious - or at least looked more intentional.

Which I guess they were.

The above images are fine, but what I really just wanted to do, was lots of repeating brush strokes on a large sheet of paper. No stupid in a circle stuff, no groups of five “tally” marks. Just one brush stroke after the another until a whole page was full.

Stopping every 50 marks or so to top-up the ink, but hey, why not keep changing the ink colour each time you top it up, so the colours gradually change from one to the next?

Until the whole sheet is filled.

# PATREON

This is all part of the “oh shit, there’s a send out postcards Patreon level, and I’m still not at the creating pen plots as part of the Drawing Machines 101 tutorial videos, so I have to do something else until we get there” stage.

Don’t get me wrong, I love making the postcards (and larger) pen plots to send out, but as previously mentioned the idea is the video and postcard making are supposed to be the same thing in a super time efficient feedback loop 😁

Meanwhile, each time I make these extra specifically for Patreon plots I want to make a video explaining the process - instead I’m just adding it to the list of fun videos I’ll go back and make once everything is all over.

Needless to say there’s a nice backlog of potential videos building up.

Anyway, the short version is, I loved the whole-page-being-filled version so much that another tweak of the code later and I had it calculating the gaps to leave to I could cut the page up into postcards, and even the trim marks to make the whole thing easier.

My favorite part is these are basically just simple lines, the maths is easy, draw a single line from point A to point B, do it again and again and again and again and again and AGAIN.

The brush and the ink is doing all the work here.

Oh, and these all got posted out yesterday, making this the worst Patreon self-promotion ever, but I guess there’s always next month.

There’s a show, “sequencefest”, it’s run by Bantam Tools, it’s in their gallery in Peekskill, NY (135 N. Water Street, Peekskills, NY 10566 - to be precise), it features; James Merrill (who created the animation above), Nat Sarkissian, Nima Nabavi and Bre Pettis; you can probably buy shit, it opens on Friday the 13th (lucky!!) at 5:30pm, “Artists will be present the following day in the gallery on March 14” - and it runs until fuck knows when, because apparently we don’t put useful information like that on websites anymore; maybe I’m just old and people don’t care about end dates now, is that fashion? Is it open-ended? Is it a two day affair? Who knows, it remains a fricking mystery.

Sequencefest is an exhibition of animated works, bringing together four distinct voices in generative and motion-based art, exploring plotted movement, digital animation, and screen-based storytelling within a physical gallery environment.

Animations will be shown on screens throughout the space and will also be available for purchase. Select works will be offered as framed 18 x 24 pieces, with additional editions available in accessible card and mat formats.

As I’ve mentioned a few times before, that, in theory Module 1 of Drawing Machines 101 would be consumed all in one go - once the last couple of module 1 videos are done it’ll clock in at around 1h 30m - which, if you were sitting down for a class at college or Uni, would be a reasonable Something 101 introduction session.

So I imagine it’s still a little weird for people following along in real time, having a new short video popping up once every few days; but this’ll stop being an issue soon enough I guess once I publish the next two.

Now and then I’ll see someone posting the question “Where can I buy some pen plotter art?” - often over on reddit r/plotterart - and I assume half the time it’s someone doing research into how much to charge for art (not a bad idea tbh).

There’s normally a couple of replies.

Meanwhile over on Instagram there’s a few “Links in bio” - which is great when you land on an artist you like and they have some links and one of them is a shop - but not so great when you just want to go shopping.

‘Cause I also wanted to keep track of who has a YouTube channel, or a newsletter too, I figured I’d just very fucking slowly build a hand crafted directory.

Definitely not a “best of”, the order is randomised (something I’m going to have to deal with when I hit enough entries for there to be pagination), and I’m focusing first on artists with shops, but it’s a start.

It’s also a very low priority, but it’s nice to have something I can tinker with when I have 30mins spare here or there. Going off to track down another artist with a shop and adding them is a fun way to spend an evening.

I’m going to be honest with you; there are times I just want to grab my laptop & a reasonable sized drawing machine, head off into a workshop in the woods and just make art.

No videos, no “content” for social media, no websites, no directories, no work - just endless days, weeks, months of going through my sketchbooks and notes and making art to my heart’s content.

But, I think the world is a better place for these things in it; the video course, tutorials, books, blog posts, and so on. Every time I see someone creating a book, preparing something for a show, teaching a workshop, helping other people, I think about how they’re making a decision to set aside time they could be making art to do that instead.

What I didn’t realise is what a blessing decided to post out monthly art on Patreon was (this isn’t a shill btw, although it may sound like that). My current aim is to keep bashing through the tutorial videos until they’re all done, I’m looking down the barrel of months and months of work.

I thought that the Patreon was another thing for other people, but it turns out making the Riso prints last month, the asemic writing the month before, and the POSCA dots before that have been a lifeline each month, a short two-three week project that I have to do.

I expect it’s the same for people doing daily (and dailyish) work. It can’t be perfect, and you have to move on, but oh boy do you have fun crunching through ideas.

Having the Patreon has forced me to set aside time from making the videos to make art, and without it I’d probably lose the plot 😁

This month, fwiw, is going to be something like this, but different, but the same…

# PEN & PAPER | DRAWING MACHINE 101

Finally got my shit together and hit publish on video #3 in the Drawing Machine 101 series; we’re still in the introduction and setup stage, the coding happens in a few videos’ time.

One of my favourite things, is to watch videos where people are making or doing something fairly niche, but which is new to them. The person is competent and I learn from watching them, but then diving into the comments gives you even more hints & tips as people made suggestions on how to do things better (or even sometimes “properly”).

And I’m not even being snarky (honest); I’m not yet painting the walls of a barn, or restoring a Land Rover, or building a greenhouse, but there’s always some top tips down in the comments if I were ever going to do some of those things.

So I’m very pleased to see the comments on my video are already filling up with better pen & ink suggestions than I made, and pretty sure will continue to do so for years to come 😁

One of the ideas behind the Patreon; where people can support the making of the Drawing Machines 101 videos (I want them to be free & they take a bunch of time and resources to make, I’m fine with taking that on, but people supporting takes the edge of that a bit), is that I send out artwork each month.

To keep myself sane and not burning out, the things I post out each month are supposed to be created in the process of making the videos.

However, while we’re still in the introduction videos phase I’m not actually making plots, so for the first few months I’ve been doing fun extra things. This month has been Riso prints based a custom code variant of the “80s Pop Roxy 🍿” project, which in turn is based on the “70s Pop” pen plots.

While I’m looking forwards to everything coming together in virtuous cycles: making videos supports the patreon, the patreon supports making videos; I’m enjoying a second feedback loop of trying to learn how to use the Riso machine while setting up the Riso studio, and getting to send off the results.

One day the Venn Diagram of all the things I’m doing will hopefully become nearly a fully overlapping circle.

I have a headache, I should probably drink more water but I don’t want to, my glasses feel like an enemy, I can see the words on the screen clearly but everything else around the edge of my vision smears sickeningly.

I have a newsletter to write today otherwise tomorrow is screwed, which fucks up Friday, but we’re only about 10% of the way through the year, plenty of time to catch up.

Thankfully posted the below to her IG stories the other day, which got me thinking, and was going to make this whole thing a lot easier.

# A SIDE NOTE ON PROCESS

I got up at 6am, went through the morning routine, got my shit together, grabbed my phone to put some music on, and just before heading out the door opened Instagram on my laptop and saw the story posted above.

I had thoughts, so I grabbed my Sony dictaphone, and in pretty much a stream of consciousness spoke them out as I walked the 25mins to the studio. A few days worth of audio notes had built up, mostly around ideas for the next newsletter, so I finally plugged it into the computer and told the AI to deal with it.

You don’t need to read the text in the screenshot below, there’s honestly too much for too little payoff, but I thought some people may be interested in the process.

I don’t use AI to help me write these newsletters (which is probably obvious) - I even stopped using Grammerly when they started shoving too much AI into it - I liked it telling me when to add or remove commas and stick in a semi-colon; I didn’t like it suggesting I re-write whole paragraphs or asking me if I need help getting started.

I do use AI to transcribe my voice notes and update Obsidian with what I’ve asked it to update my notes with 😁

As part of website homepage tending, I started a “miniblog” https://revdancatt.com/miniblog which is just a place I can post very small updates (which isn’t twitter) mainly to amuse myself. I’ve designed it so I can only add one image per post → title, body text, image → as some sort of constraint I thought was a good idea at the time. I’m mentioning it here because I was asked if I could add an RSS/Atom feed to it, so I did, right down at the bottom of the pages (that don’t infinitely scroll).

There’s another reason for doing this which is connected to archives and archiving, but that’s for another time.

I also added RSS and Atom feeds to a bunch of other places on the website too, ‘cause I now have the code so why not.

Yes I know, the weekend is the weekend and not the weekends. But I’m 53 and not going to change my way of thinking now.

*Not in a bad way; in that all of my art is work, and my brain is swapping out the “dance” for Interesting.

So I can imagine standing on the stage and the audience going “We didn’t come here for (your work) art, we only came here for Interesting things”; or, from last year, robot dancing.

What can I say, I’m not entirely sure my brain is working right and this is all a fever dream.

After googling the cooking temperature of living human flesh I decided to turn the settings down a couple of notches. My feet were tingling and my liver and kidneys were feeling uncomfortably hot.

I was wearing heated socks, trousers and gilet for the first time, the cold was banished apart from the tips of my fingers and nose, while the rest of me was feeling perhaps a little too toasty.

# STAYING OPERATIONAL AT 2℃/35℉

There’s no heating here in the art studio, and there’s no point trying to heat the room as it’s open to the kitchen area and the stairs, which lead to the rest of the building and outside. To heat the studio is to heat the whole of Shrewsbury.

Last year I got a heated blanket and heated shawl, which were great, but they plugged into a socket which left me somewhat tethered, even with the extension cable.

This year when I looked there were a lot more heated things (like the socks, trousers, gloves, hats and jackets) which were powered from batteries with USB-C.

You charged the battery up, plugged it in, popped it into a small pocket and moved around freely. Which is great, but lasted about three hours, and I’m in the studio from around 8am to 6pm, 10 hours.

And so the battery rotation station came into existence, some 3d printing and a couple of extra batteries for each item and I was good to go.

Now in the morning I put all the heated clothing on, set a timer for 3 hours, and get on with making art. After 3 hours I switch to the next battery, and so on. Each time the next battery is fully charged by the time I get back around to it.

Turns out the high temperature settings are great for a short burst, but as my quick bit of research discovered, 10 hours a day at max setting would slowly cook my insides

Interestingly I discovered the top choice, the Uni Jetstream, just before the holidays when looking for some colourful lightfast pens - they’re not all lightfast, but the main colours are (although I need to go back and get an exact list), which is a great find for reliable, colourful pens that won’t fade.

I agree with “The Best White Gel Pen for Art: Uni-ball Signo White Gel Pen” - which I find a bit better than the Sakura Gelly Roll.

Other favorites like the Uni-ball Signo UM-151 Gel Pen and TWSBI Eco fountain pen are also on the list.

But if you want pens for drawing machines, the whole list is an amazing place to start.

When I was a kid there was a TV program called “The Adventure Game”, each episode (from series 2 onwards) ended with The Vortex.

The game was played on a triangle/hex lattice (3-4-3-4-3-4-3), with the celebrity player, often a children’s tv presenter, at one side and the “vortex” at the other, which was invisible to the player. They’d take it in turns to move, and if they player moved into the vortex’s space they were eliminated.

Obviously with the vortex being invisible this was somewhat a game of chance, but it did allow me to divide tv celebrities into those who were cool, and those who clearly didn’t fucking understand game theory, probability, and optimising a statistically correct strategy.

No Keith No! Don’t move to that spot on the very edge, now you’ve limited the number of viable next moves and reduced your chances of winning. Oh God, he’s moved backwards, the twat!

And that’s how Keith Chegwin got sucked off by the vortex! This would never have happened to Maggie Philbin*.

I was 9 at the time, and not yet diagnosed with autism, but the signs were there.

# MAKING COHERENT BRUSH STROKES

I’ve been plotting my postcards for the #ptpx2025 Pen Plotter Postcard Exchange, with (sometimes) fancy ink, brush pens and the ArtFrame drawing machine, which allows me to control the height of the brush using the magic of GCODE.

I wanted to share a little of the behind the scenes on this one ‘cause I think it’s fun. Here’s an image to get started, it’s my own mini version of the Vortex!

The “game” is to generate nice sweeping brushstrokes that start at the top of the page/design and swoosh their way generally down. So here are the rules…

• Randomly start at either position 0, 1, or 2.

• Each “turn” you have a 10% chance of moving up, 20% chance of moving sideways and 70% chance of moving down. If you can’t move up, roll again. If there’s more than one option to move sideways or move down, flip a coin to see which way you go.

• When you reach the bottom, take one more turn then end the “game”.

• If there’s less than 8 points in the final path, throw it away and start over.

This gives us a “random walk” that always starts at the top, and will eventually make it’s way to the bottom. Because they’re all based on the same underlying lattice/substrate they’ll be consistent.

Next stage, throw in a pendulum.

Ignore the complicated one on the right for the moment.

Imagine a single point at the top of the page, and attach a pendulum that swings back and forth (and attach a pen to that pendulum). The pen would swoosh back and forth drawing an arc over and over until it rips through the paper (bad).

Imagine a second point near the bottom of the page, and now let the pendulum’s pivot point slowly move from the top to the bottom, while swinging back and forth. You’d end up with back and forth swooshes going down the page (better, but boring).

Now, much harder to imagine, but thankfully pretty easy to code, a pendulum that swings back and forth, as the pivot point it’s attached to slowly moves along the path we created.

Here’s the complicated one from above, with all the points along the path. BUT, an added rule; as the brush/line moves downwards the line gets thicker (and on the drawing machine we move the brush closer to the paper), and as we move upwards the line gets thinner (we move the brush away from the paper).

You’ll probably have noticed there’s actually two lines 🤔

This is because I want the main black line, and then a “sympathetic” supporting coloured line. The two lines are created by starting two pendulums at slightly different angles & swinging at slightly different speeds.

They’ll slowly move out of sync as it moves towards the end of the design, but because they follow the same path they’ll be in roughly the same area (as opposed to both lines doing their own thing).

I need to get Kitty to write on some of these and then get them into the post. I have, of course, plotted far too many so I’m going to be sending extra ones out over the next few months, and Patreon.

I figured someone may find this useful, I do for a couple of reasons I’ll note below, it looks a lot like this…

# VISUAL & TACTILE

Whenever I’m feeling lost or overwhelmed I write things down on index cards, stick them on the table and rearrange them until everything start to make sense. It could be tasks in a project, or todo items to get done throughout the week. Working on screen just doesn’t help, I need to see the bigger picture.

One sticking point has been planning out when to schedule things throughout the month.

This one was me figuring out when to post updates to the Patreon. I know the 1st is for saying what the plan is for the month, the 3rd Wednesday is for sending post out, which means the next day is Q&A post, with answers at the end of the month.

I wanted four updates on the project and saw how the 3rd one was going to fall the day before the newsletter, so better make it a “mini” one to not give myself too much to do.

When figuring out how to fit everything in I’ll often have several index card calendars on the desk, each for different things; I find looking at them so much easier than on-screen digital views.

I also find there’s something limiting about having just one shop bought calendar, with the need to get everything final-and-right on your single chance to get everything final-and-right month view page.

Having disposable (recyclable) index cards reduces friction.

Something I’ve found handy when working with a team is sending a large A1 month plot to the drawing machine, then mapping out project tasks using post-it notes or coloured index cards (or coloured beads and counters). Which I just can’t do (easily) with a normal printer.

Other times, a couple of index cards propped up on the desk and one tucked into my notebook have been a life-saver.

# KITTY & CODE

The link (https://revdancatt.com/calendar/) is a bit of a hack tbh. Normally I just tell Kitty (my AI PA) to plot out a calendar using the NextDraw she’s wired up to, and the Kitty backend is written in NodeJS.

The handwriting is really a webservice that runs on my laptop, where I (or Kitty) can POST some text to it (often addresses for envelopes, or daily todo lists) and get some SVG back.

But while I’m happy to have that running on my laptop, I’m not totally sure I want to put Kitty’s handwriting API out there on the web.

So what I’ve done is convert a whole bunch of the NodeJS backend SVG generating code into frontend javascript, pre-generated a few hundred variations of each month, day, year and numbers 1 to 31, and replaced what would have been a call to the API with loading up a random variation.

It’s a weird work-around, but gets the job done.

I also put up the code for this calendar thing so people can run it locally over on patreon, but I think you have to sign up to grab it. But so far I’ve found it to be one of the better ways of sharing code that isn’t GitHub.

# ADVENTURES IN DITHERING

Dithering and chunky pixels are nostalgia for old digital screens.

Halftone patterns and dots are nostalgia for old print.

Feels like a fairly uncontroversial statement.

And I’m all about the print, so halftones for me, but, ugh, I backed myself into a corner.

## POSCA

I have a box full of POSCA acrylic paint pens. I bought them ages ago thinking they’d be great for drawing on black paper with the pen plotter, I was so wrong. Let’s take a closer look at the pens…

…yeah, you need to shake them before use, fine. Then “pump” them several times to get the ink to flow, also fine; but you have to keep doing that repeatedly throughout the plot or else they dry up. Which is tricky when they’re strapped into the machine.

However, I’ve been getting the ArtFrame to use rubber stamps & ‘cause it uses GCODE, you can use that GCODE to SLAM whatever it’s holding down as fast at possible.

Which got me thinking, why not write the code so the machine draws some lines, and then after a certain distance moves the pen onto some sacrificial paper, in a corner somewhere, z-index the fuck out of it, repeatedly SLAMMING it up and down several times, before going back to drawing.

And as we saw last newsletter with the dots, I ended up decided the whole thing should just be dots/pumping the pen, so it’s always primed with paint/ink.

That’s one half of the halftone equation done.

## HALFTONE

Wikipedia sez

Basically you can create the appearance of shade by varying the size of dots on a grid, shown above a hexgrid. Below, mixing CYMK dots at various sizes to make different colours.

That’s fine, but I have pens, those pens have nibs, and those nibs make 2mm dots.

THUD, THUD, THUD, DOT, DOT, DOT.

2mm, no more, no less. I either have a dot or no dot.

So I can’t halftone with different sized dots, but I can dither. But I don’t want a chunky pixel square grid dither, ‘cause that’s for screens and retro games, I want print, so I want to use a hexgrid, now to escape the corner I’ve painted myself into.

## HEX DITHERING

The trick to dithering is knowing which pixels or dots to turn on and off. The links above show there’s several ways of doing this, but I like to keep things simple, so here’s a grid of 12 dots…

We’ll get onto why they’re numbered like that in just a moment.

First thing to note though is we can repeat this group of 12 dots over and over to fill in the whole page, I’ve coloured them to make it easier to see.

So what happens if we turn off dot number 11? We get this…

We’ll make it easier to see the whole pattern by turning all the dots to black, and switching half of them off.

The trick to shading is pretty simple. We take an image, turn it greyscale, and then at any particular point work out what the grey value is on a scale of 0-12.

12 is light (pure white), and 0 is dark (pure black).

Then we turn off any dots under that value. So if something is pure white (12), we turn off all the dots that are less than 12, i.e. all of them. If it’s black we turn off all the dots under 0; none of them.

If it’s light grey, say 9, we turn off all the dots under 9, leaving just the 9, 10 & 11 dots.

If it’s dark grey, 3, we turn off all the dots under 3, keeping all the dots numbered 3 to 11.

The dots are numbered in such a way that the pattern remains “interesting” as you remove dots. There’s better ways (the 10th and 11th dots are too closely aligned for my liking), but this is quick & dirty and good enough, shown below is a gradient of all 13 “shades”. Note: the “grid” is rotated about 40° counter-clockwise here.

So now instead of getting a halftone effect by changing the size of the dot, we can use hex-dithering instead. If we take an original image and split it into separate CMYK channels, convert each channel to greyscale, then plot using a different rotation angle for each layer, we get something like this (I threw the black channel away)…

While writing this newsletter I found this set of posts about applying error diffusion to a hex grid: https://loomsci.wordpress.com/tag/error-diffusion/ - which is probably the closest to this, as they’re using hexagon “pixels” of a set size, so they can only vary colour (and in some experiments shade).

This paper also uses error diffusion on a hexagonal grid.

I can see this was posted back in 2019 which at least has the tag ‘penplot’ and mentions pens and dots, but I don’t see any actual pen plots done with it.

So I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest this is the world’s first hexagonal order dithering with a threshold map of 12 levels, multi-coloured pen plot. It doesn’t take much to be the world’s first at something, you just need to narrow the criteria down a lot 😁

Spotify can go get wrecked, obviously.

I mean it’s probably more nuanced than that; it’s great for listeners and AI warfare, but bad for artists and AI warfare, and so the reality is probably somewhere between those two points.

Back in ‘23 to go along with my Alba FALLiNGWATER project, I made a Spotify playlist of music I was listening to while developing it, and the type of music that created the type of album art I was inspired by.

For me music & art are very closely aligned, and I pretty much always have a “mixtape” in mind that goes along with a project, with FALLiNGWATER I took the extra (mild) step of publishing it.

[Pretend there’s an insightful paragraph here about how people are turning away from digital services & subscriptions and embracing physical media - etc. etc. you know the drill, it’s all over the place at the moment, certainly doesn’t need to be here too! Oh, add an extra bit about piracy 🏴‍☠️]

IKR, nailed it!!

In short, I started exfiltrating various playlists onto bootleg mixtapes.

FALLiNGWATER was almost perfect for this, 1h 25min fits nicely onto a C90.

I could go into the art of the car drive mixtape; you gotta know how long it’s going to take to get there and back.

18-22mins each way = 45min mix tape. Around 45min each way = C90. Any longer and you may have to burn two CD-Rs, one for going out, and the other for coming back.

Going out is your battle music, coming back is chill out.

Which is how the FALLiNGWATER playlist was built. Unfortunately when putting it onto tape I couldn’t quite split the tracks nicely and Offshore by Chicane had to tuck onto the end of side A, rather than at the start of side B where it belongs. Can’t have everything I guess.

A-Side runs at 43:46, B-Side is 41:29.

When the combination of inside temperature, outside temperature, number of plays, distance travelled, the moon & the mood is right the car will eat the tape, as it should; it is foretold.

# PATREON CORNER

I opened up my Patreon kinda at the wrong time, the start of the month would have been better but we don’t always get to choose.

The idea behind it is two-fold; first it’s somewhere I can put the Drawing Machine 101 videos where YouTube doesn’t throw adverts on them. I have more thoughts about that, but I’ll save them for another time.

The second is having a good place to interact with people that isn’t just shouting into the void. I’ve heard the phrase “PATREON IS MY OFFICE HOURS” - which stuck with me; I can’t always reply on social media, or YouTube comments, or here, but I CAN always do that over at Patreon. But that’s also thoughts-for-another-time.

The main things it does is give me; a good way to send physical art out to people and a schedule! This is that schedule…

Basically, the first ⅔ of the month is making and documenting things, and the second ⅓ is Q&A stuff.

Around the 3rd Wednesday of the month the things get shipped out, and the day after we open the Q&A post for questions, with the answers getting posted in video form at the end of the month.

This month we jumped right into the middle with things getting shipped pretty much right away on the theme of DOTS.

At the start of the month I post the theme for the month and we go through the whole thing again, with the Drawing Machine 101 videos posted as and when I finish editing them.

Next month’s theme carries on with DOTS, but also DITHERING…

# THE PHILOSOPHY OF DRAWING MACHINES 101

Not a tutorial, not a course!

I’ve thought a lot, probably far too much, about the philosophy behind the videos I want to make about drawing machines. I’ve also studied a bunch of video courses to figure out what I don’t want to do.

It’s not that I don’t like courses and tutorials, in fact I love them, but whenever I’ve sat down and made a video like that I’ve always disliked the result; the power dynamic puts the “teacher” in the active roll, “I am going to teach you these things”.

But I think that’s hard to do in video, the recording has already been done, a snapshot of time now presented as a moving image on the screen. The viewer is the active participant, they’ve come to learn, the interaction is on their side and they can choose to click away at any time (and more power to them).

The way I’m approaching the videos is as though I have a friend (who doesn’t know anything about drawing machines) who wants to visit my studio to watch what I’m doing, and then decides to stick around to see how I go about making & creating; the under-the-hood stuff; the thinking and approaches.

I’m not teaching, instead I’m showing how I do things and why.

But I’m also aware there’s probably a good order to how I show what I’m doing; rather than jumping in at the end, I can start by demonstrate the core concepts I use over and over again, and then how I combine and build on those to make more complex things.

My friend may just stick around because they enjoy watching someone do something they love, or maybe they’ll even have a go and will hopefully take elements of what I’m doing and apply it to what they want to do, while learning things in the process.

Of course it’s fine to call the whole thing a course, and each video a tutorial; it’s a useful shorthand so we can all get on with more important things in our life.

But, it’s a gentle reminder to myself when approaching making a video not to start from a position of…

“I’m going to teach you how to write loops in code”

…but rather…

“I want to draw LOTS of lines, here’s how I’d go about doing that”

…because I want it to be about the art first and then how we do that second.

Shooting for the next video; showing how the machine arm moves from side-to-side, in-and-out, and then combining both to draw other shapes.

The Drawing Machines 101 videos are (hopefully) what they call “evergreen content” on YouTube, in that it’s not supposed to “pop off and go viral” now, but rather be there waiting for when someone types in “how to get started with pen plotting” at some point in the future.

So far just the first video is up, but one day the whole lot will be there, and under each one is a link to my currently new Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/revdancatt - which isn’t really for now, but for the future.

It just happens that I need to make it live now so I can link to it, tbh, I’d rather leave it another six months, but sadly things don’t work like that and it’d just be more trouble that it’s worth, so here we are.

I’ve had a few people ask why I’m going to be uploading the whole “course” (lol) for free on YouTube, why not stick it on SkillShare or somewhere and charge for it.

The main answer is that I love pen plotting and want as many people as possible to get an introduction to it, the more drawing machine artists there are the better it is for all of us.

But; if I do put my business hat on for one moment, the answer is probably two fold.

The first is that it’s a trust building exercise, if we both get through this and out the other end then it means everything works, phew!

The second is this is a 101 introduction, it gets people up and running. Perhaps I can create some actual advanced tutorials, and at that point I know I can make them, and you know I can make them. More importantly, as the DM101 videos go out I can see where most of the questions are, and interest is. Then I can either choose to make a quick video to fill in the gaps, or add it to my list of “advanced tutorials”.

Which can then be tucked away on Patreon, which also by that point will have enough stuff on to prove I’m not some fly-by-night-AI-content-farm.

The main problem I have with Patreon, more than most social media, is there’s a feeling of needing to get things right from the very beginning. It stresses that it’s harder to change things once people join, so I guess you set all the memberships at the start and hope it all works out. I know you can change things, but it’s presented as being a pain in the ass for everyone involved.

I’ve already written about this in the past in #27 - Super Stupid Patreon Maths — where I worked out that was entirely possible to Denial of Service yourself by getting so many members that your whole time is spent posting physical prints & plots out to people, with no time left to actually do anything.

So two things.

First, the membership tiers I ended up going with; £4, £8, £16, £32, £64 and £128 are satisfyingly nerdy until they get displayed in US dollars at $5.26 … $21.04 … all the way to $168.28 - where they lose some of their charm. I probably should have thought about that one a little more.

The second thing; I’ve limited the number of members at each level, not in a hustle “get in quick before they’ve all gone” way, because I very much doubt that’ll happen, but more to keep things within safety levels. If all the slots did get filled that’s 120 postcards to create and post a month, which is already a bit much, without all the other A5, A3 and oddity stuff.

Most people very sensibly stick to digital things (like courses, or downloads), so I kinda want to get that limit locked in now - just in case.

If we go back two issues, to where AI made this “levels” chart for me.

I’m up to three members so far! So nearly ⅓ of the way to “💝 Starting point”.

I think I’m aiming for “🎯 Major milestone” by the end of the DM101 series, it’ll be fun to track and I’ll keep you posted, although I may need to split this out into paid and free members.

# KITTY2 - AI BOOGALOO

A quick update to the last newsletter where I mentioned buying a Sony ICD-TX660 dictaphone, and stringing together Hazel app, Obsidian, MacWhisper and the Cursor IDE to copy over, transcribe and process mp3 files.

Turns out I wasn’t too lazy to write my own code and instead started work on Kitty2, a newer version of my studio AI PA. It’s still very early days and all it currently does is, firstly, transcribe mp3 file from the dictaphone, which honestly is THE BEST THING EVER, and works SO MUCH BETTER than I was expecting 😁 It’s almost spooky good.

Whenever I’m away from my laptop and have a sudden thought or idea I just hit record on the Sony (which has zero start up time) and say whatever I’m thinking, but with a request at the start or end “Can you file this away in my video ideas, thanks… blah blah blah, oh and I need to remember to do X, Y, Z, can you add that to the todo list” - and it just works (with you know, a whole bunch of code behind it).

The other thing I’ve done with Kitty2 is wire up this conference microphone, and a big glowing mute button.

The button is supposed to glow RED when the mic is recording and GREEN when it’s muted and safe. But the constant red light was putting me on edge, so I switched it to GREEN when recording/working and BLUE when muted.

I know the… hold on… “Anker PowerConf S330 USB Conference Speaker for Home Office, Smart Voice Enhancement, Plug and Play, 360° Voice Coverage via 4 Microphones, and Powerful Sound” …phew, has its own mute button, and having a big glowing button that only does one thing; toggling this one specific mic on/off, may be a bit much, but it is very satisfying. At some point I’ll 3d print a retro enclosure for them both.

Which means Kitty2 is now always listening, except when it’s not (when someone else is around, or I’m on a zoom/video/phone call), and dumps down, transcribes and processes the audio whenever it detects I’ve shut up for 30 seconds.

This is in response to the Bee AI getting bought out by Amazon, and the Omi AI pendent being a bit shit.

Ultimately, rolling my own so I could keep everything local to my laptop was going to happen, but I got so irritated over the weekend that it happened sooner than expect 😁

I’ll confess, I wasn’t expecting the conference mic to be as good as it is. I’m moving around my studio all the time and it hasn’t yet not picked up what I’m saying.

Having my hands full on the other side of the studio while changing the pen in a drawing machine and saying things like “Hey Kitty, I need to remember to buy some cheese” and have it pop up on my todo list a couple of minutes later is very satisfying. Meanwhile having a summary of whatever else I’ve said out loud in the studio at the end of the day is also surprisingly useful.

Work had a deadline, that deadline has been hit and and gone (yesterday), things are a LOT calmer now, thank goodness. There’s still tinkering to be done, and a lot of UI work, but I can now breath.

Honestly I’m a bit surprised I’ve managed to publish a video, get halfway through another one, update a website, start Patreon and get a new version of my AI up and running, oh, and this newsletter written! But I must confess to feeling a little tired now.

I’m going to keep the next few weeks nice and simple; the first 2-3 hours in the studio either recording, editing or writing the next video in the series, and then working. Oh, and sending Patreon “rewards” out around the 3rd Wednesday of each month, so that’s a new thing I guess.

Anyway, thank you for hanging tight while 'I’ve battled with this whole “tutorial” thing for the past couple of years, and thank you for all the support and kind words so far, even on “just” the introduction, it’s been very validating 😁

# RISO GHOSTS

The other week I had to show a couple of people who may end up running workshops how to use the Riso printer. One thing about Riso printers, they’re a bit temperamental in that they’ve been designed to be used, like, daily. And both Clare and I have been busy, so its been sat there for a few weeks sulking. To stop the sulking you have to go and run some prints through it to warm it up.

I quickly threw together a ghost sketch in Procreate, separated it out into two greyscale layers, one for each colour, and then printed out an A3 sheet for each.

The Riso is a bit like a cross between screen printing and a photocopier. A photocopier ‘cause you put the thing you want to copy into the top and it, well, copies it. A screen print, because the thing it copies goes onto a screen.

Here’s two of the ink drums from the machine, if you squint a bit you can see where its “burnt” the ghost design onto the screen, that’s where the ink will get pushed through onto the card/paper.

The other thing about Riso is it likes to make hundreds of copies, its main use is for offices printing documents — until artists got their hands on them. Put another way, printing one-off single sheets is not in its nature, you can, but again it sulks. I even felt a little stingy only running 10 copies of each colour way through.

I left one uncut sheet at the Riso studio (for their records), and one uncut at mine (for my records).

It was only after cutting up eight sheets of eight ghosts in three colour-ways did I end up going “Now what the fuck am I supposed to do with 192 ghost postcards?”

# HANDWRITING

Kitty, my AI PA Studio Manager, has access to my handwriting; a whole thing I still really need to make a video and write a long-ass blog post about. There’s a lot of reasons to give my handwriting to an AI, and most of those aren’t nefarious!

The down side is that my handwriting is pretty fricking awful. So much so that Kitty also has her own handwriting for when I need things to be legible. Here’s an example of the todo lists she writes for me each morning.

If it’s not blindingly obvious, Kitty’s handwriting is on the left, my scrawl is on the right. She normally does the left style, I asked for one in my handwriting as an example.

(And just for clarity, I didn’t write any of that, that’s Kitty generating the todo list, and then converting the text into my handwriting using code and a ridiculously large dataset of my cursive script)

There’s an argument that very sensibly goes “I don’t want AI doing all the fun creative stuff, like art and music and writing, I want AI to do all the boring stuff like housework and laundry” - and I’m very much in that camp.

I’m not against AI, I just want it to do admin tasks around the art studio and make todo lists for me.

# KITTY

I’ve talked about Kitty (my AI PA) a little in the past, but a quick recap.

• In the morning Kitty asks me questions for the upcoming day, based on what the system knows about the previous 14 days. Then she writes a todo list.

• At the end of the day Kitty asks me a bunch of questions about how it all went, and just how much it did or didn’t go to plan.

• Throughout the day Kitty asks me questions about how it’s going based on the morning questions, which todo items I’ve ticked off and some random noise to keep things interesting.

I’ve also wired Kitty up so I can just talk-out-loud and it’ll get transcribed and squirrelled away in a “memories” database (and Obsidian).

Sometimes, about 10% of the time, instead of asking a question Kitty will make a suggestion or an observation. 12.5% of that time, she’ll be using her sarcastic personality profile while making an observation, which she sends through the Vestaboard and it always makes me laugh.

On Monday, using a more useful personality she suggested I send the Riso Ghost postcards off to people.

This isn’t out of the blue, I’d previously talked about sending postcards to people, and separately that I had one-hundred-and-ninety-fucking-two ghost postcards, she (the Large Language next word prediction Model) just put two and two together.

So I asked her to write 50 short halloween messages for me, a quick once over to check nothing had gone off the rails, then gave them to the grown up plotter to actually draw (Kitty only has access to an A4 drawing machine).

Thankfully for everyone involved she used her own handwriting.

# DICTAPHONE

Two problems I have.

One

A lot of the thoughts, ideas, rambling half-figured out plans, come to me when I’m either walking to the studio in the morning, or walking back home again, 23 minutes each way.

Inspiration will strike, or a fleeting thought that’ll evaporate faster than I can grab the notebook from my pocket and write it down; especially true if three related ideas come along at once, I’ll get the first two down and the last one will escape into the aether.

I HATE THE VOICE NOTES APP ON THE iPHONE

Or rather how the phone handles any voice recording. I have Air Pods in, or headphones on, and I can’t go “Hey Siri…” and launch into a voice recording for stupid “security” reasons, pffffff.

No, I gotta fish the phone out of my pocket, and as soon as I start to record, it stops whatever music, video or podcast I’m listening too. Which I don’t really want, I can pause the music if I want, but really I want to listen to music while walking and talking.

Worse, when I finish and unpause it’ll play whatever the hell it feels like, “What’s that, you were listening to a podcast, not any more, here’s some music I was playing yesterday!” - “You wanted to hear more of that YouTube video, no! Even though you only paused for 6 seconds I have a better idea”.

I genuinely don’t know how hard it could be for the iPhone to carry on playing what it was just playing!! Or, perhaps let me keep listening to something from my phone even though I dared to open my laptop. But judging from what Apple have managed, it’s really fucking hard.

Which is why I now have this tiny thing, a Sony ICD-TX660 dictaphone.

Now I can listen to music and talk my brains out into the magic voice recording shard, things like “Hey Kitty, I just thought that I wanna talk about the ghost postcards in the newsletter, and I need to remember to water the sweet pea seeds at the weekend, and Monzo keeps telling me I’m paying for a Medium membership and I haven’t read anything on Medium for about a year, I should probably cancel that…” etc. etc.

This morning I tested plugging it in; Hazel App grabbed the .mp3 files and copied them over to an Obsidian folder and deleted the originals off the shard, MacWhisper spotted them and transcribed them into simple .txt files, “Clive” (a different AI connected to the Cursor IDE) detected the .txt files, consumed them and either updated my Obsidian files or passed things over to Kitty to handle, who did and then deleted the rest of the files to tidy everything up.

Despite all the slightly awkward plumbing and chaining of various apps together (I know, I know, I could write some code to do it, but I’m kinda lazy) to MacGyver it to work, it does feel a little bit like living in the future.

After far too long this has now lost all meaning, but — I have finally recorded (for the second time) the first video in the whole Introduction to Drawing Machines series, and asides from work, this is now the only thing on my plate. Which means I’m starting the next one tomorrow, and then the one after that, and so on until they’re all done.

Actually properly happening.

I’m updating various bits and pieces around the internet connected to the video, and the soon-to-be-upcoming ones, but as it was all very last minute, last night, I want to let that bed in a little more, so I will be talking about it in the next newsletter, which is… Thursday 13th of November.

Ten years ago I wrote the below post. In the intervening years it got lost in the numerous https://revdancatt.com redesigns. To celebrate the 10th anniversary and Halloween, here it is brought back to life.

Sometimes I find myself in a situation where I need to talk to a child, ugh, I know.

For some people talking to kids comes naturally, I am not one of those people. My usual gambit is to ask them what they’re interested in and taking it from there. But sometimes that just doesn’t work, they’re not interested in anything, or they’re not interested in sharing it, or they’re too intimidated by my beard to say anything.

When that happens I fall back on my ghost questions. The handy thing about these questions is that even if they don’t believe in ghosts, or answer in the negative to a bunch of these you can just keep going.

Best of all, whenever I’ve asked these questions the answers have always been charming.

1. Do you believe in ghosts?

2. If there’s thunder and loads of rain, does a ghost get wet?

3. Can it get hit by lightening?

4. If the wind is strong, does it blow away?

5. Can a ghost breath underwater?

6. Are there human ghosts underwater?

7. Do monkeys have ghosts?

8. Do birds have ghosts?

9. Do bird ghosts get wet in rain or blow away in strong wind?

10. Do cows have ghosts?

11. Could you have a cow ghost underwater?

12. Do fish have ghosts?

13. Why don’t we see fish ghosts on dry land?

14. Can ghosts go on holiday?

15. If a fish died in a fish bowl, and then the fish bowl is moved, does the fish ghost haunt the area where the fish bowl was even if there isn’t any water?

16. Can you spray paint a ghost?

17. If you spray a ghosts with stinky perfume will it smell?

18. What happens if two ghosts try to run through each other?

19. If you blow dry a ghost does it go fluffy?

# GHOST FEEDBACK

Over the years, even after the original post vanished from my website I’ve had people telling me they often break out the ghost questions, sometimes even as ice-breakers with not-kids.

The thing I like about these is even when someone doesn’t believe in ghost, and blast through the first half with a stubborn “no”, they often end up getting drawn into the logic of how the material of a ghost works, you know, theoretically.

# SLOW SOCIAL MEDIA

A quick newsletter this time, as I’m taking even more of a break from social media.

Up to this point, and with the recent changes to posting to Instagram once a month, my whole output into the social media space is seven times a month.

Four YouTube “Weeknotes” videos, two newsletters (roughly), one post to Instagram and zero twitter/etc per month = Seven. Pretty sure I used to post to social media severn time plus a day, on the other hand shoving things out into the world around twice a week still seems like a lot, all things considered.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been moving my website and domains off US companies and onto EU ones. 25 years ago I set my dedicated server up on Media Temple, who were lovely, but they sold to GoDaddy, who are as awful as they sound.

There’s a couple of reasons for the move, but one of them was that when I set the server up it was an expensive thing to do, like a proper monthly expense that I’ve winced at, at various times in my life. But now better, cheaper and faster options exist and it was just pure inertia that kept me on it.

Two days ago I broke my DNS records, and worse, my email, and for a good while I thought “what if I just don’t fix it? No more email, is that bad?”

Then it fixed itself.

I will say this though; I am feeling a lot better using social media less, all those reports about less social media = happiness, seem true. But I’m also pretty sure posting often, daily even, and constantly showing new work is the best way to stay relevant and create (or be open to) opportunities.

You have to find the balance between happiness and irrelevance you’re comfortable with.

# ALGORITHMIC BOOKS, BUSY

James (https://lostpixels.io) has created an “Algorithmic Sketchbook” for his project BUSY; “I decided to make a book to deconstruct and re-contextualize the inner workings of the algorithms that compose the artwork. In typical fashion though, I used my drawing robots to meticulously create each book, in a way that resembles an artists sketchbook.”

James has made a lovely delightful thing, and I’m also super intrigued by the 3d printed tools he’d created to help the whole multiple notebook drawing process.

I’ve written about how excited I am about the whole process of code to books, magazine, zines and self publishing. Back in #059…

…and even further back in #037…

I have a feeling that (go sub to his substack too) has some interesting thoughts about code and publishing too.

My hunch is, and maybe this is just me looking for things that support my own beliefs, is that in the same way many screen based (for want of a better way of saying it) creative code artists took to using pen plotters and drawing machine, they are also getting tired of social media, and looking at zines, postcard, books and the like to keep in contact with other artists, and bringing algorithms into the process.

Cause indeed, if you’re going to pen plot a book, why not make each one different like James.

I’m on a sort of break at the moment. For the first time in about three years I’m not going to be publishing a weekly video on YouTube, which feels odd.

I’ve already resisted the temptation to make a “Studio Tour” video and a video about James’ book, and just enjoy having a week of not recording or editing video, although I’m itching to start the pen plotting tutorial videos again.

After recording and partially editing the whole first module of pen plotting tutorials I decided I was going about it all wrong. I’d spend the last two years learning how I like to make videos, and what I had in-front of me in Final Cut Pro wasn’t the vibe I wanted at all. I’d also set up the way things should be done “properly” and hadn’t realised that was one of the reasons I wasn’t enjoying the process.

It’s painful to throw away a whole bunch of footage, but now I’m feeling a lot better about how I’m going to do things, so let’s see how it all turns out.

The other day someone wrote that instead of using the perfectly correct “my lips are sealed” emoji of 🤐, their grandpa was instead writing “Your secret is safe with me 🫦” and they were not a fan.

Now I’ll always think of that because I’m old, I keep using emojis, and I have no idea what the fuck is going on and I’ll inevitably accidentally end up using something bad.

# GOALS, GROWTH AND HOW TO DO THEM

When your target based goals aren’t working out you can make yourself feel better by using process based goals.

Things like “I will write for 20 minutes each morning”, or “Each evening I’ll read a book for half an hour”, “I will definitely work on my pen plotting tutorial videos for six hours a week”, as three completely random examples. Rather than a target based goal like “I’ll read a book a month”, and so on.

The idea being that you shouldn’t be judging yourself by the act of finishing things, doing things is good enough. Unless of course you never actually finish things you need to finish i.e. most things in life.

Process goals are great, except, when you need to earn money, they’re good for hobbies, not great for jobs, and if you’re in that hustle zone of your hobby being your job, then good luck to you.

I’m not really on social media now, but in the next bit substitute SM for YouTube/TikTok/Twitter/Instagram/Flume etc.

Two situations;

• You want to grow “brand identity” at an “organic” rate

• You want to grow fast to start selling your work/getting opportunities/sponsors, etc.

In the first case you’d use process based goals, keep spending X amount of hours making “content” and post consistently.

In the second case you’d study the “market”, look at trends, meticulously test out posts/videos/“content” - see what didn’t work, and double down on what does. You’d have views & subscriber (and artwork sold) targets you’d measure and track.

It’s not rocket science, pick an approach and go for it, and when one isn’t “working” switch to the other.

Anyway, where is all this coming from? ‘cause honestly this is typical neurodivergent “setting the foundation before getting to the point” behaviour, where the point is AI did something that amused me, (that should be enough to lose another 1/3 of the readers).

I’m actual day-job working at the moment (regular income, yay) and for various reasons I haven’t had to earn money from selling my work (or being anyone of particular note on SM) for the past year and a bit, so I’m being process-based in my work.

There was a time when I set out various goals and targets, and put them into my PARgA system in Obsidian, in an attempt to see what diversifying my income streams could look like, it looked like this…

…now, to be honest I didn’t really think the numbers through very much and I’m pretty basic, so a nice round £1k from each source seemed like, well, a target. I figured I’d adjust those as things moved around, and then promptly paid no attention to them whatsoever.

Anyway I went back to look at them the other day, and noticed the “Get 10,000 Newsletter Subscribers” was a) nowhere near happening, and b) had hit some of the arbitrary targets, that were also fairly round numbers, like 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 7,500 and 10,000, and instead of doing simple maths to make those numbers “better”, I opened up my Obsidian vault in the AI code editor, pointed it at the file and said “Make the targets more like levels in a game.” — this is what it gave me.

It didn’t originally start with the emoji, or the names for each level, or the (+xxx XP) part, for the emoji and levels I just kept telling it “make it more game like” - as for the +XP part it kept lying through it’s teeth that each “level” was properly and correctly mathematically spaced. Until I asked it to put the actual differences in there, the “amount of XP I’d need to level up”, at which point it gave me some bullshit about how the last level was always supposed to be like that (less “xp” needed than the previous two), to give the “player” a good sense of achievement when they hit it. Because AI is a lying liar that tried to gaslight you and covers up its own mistakes.

This newsletter is currently at 1,548 subscribers - so I’m a Master level newsletterer, and 232 subs short of being a Grandmaster.

For anyone curious this is what Patreon and YouTube looks like (YT is a little off, as I gave it 5k as a base starting value).

And let me tell you, with process based goals, getting YouTube to 6,750 subs is not an “Easy win” and 9,125 is not a fricking “Small challenge” tyvm!

# BONFIRE vs FIREWORK

I once (and sadly only once) had a chance to chat with Douglas Adams, who was both a delight and incredibly smart on a whole bunch of different topics.

One of the reasons why he was so incredibly smart is that he knew and got to talk to lots of other smart people, and in some cases he got to do that when he wanted to know something because he could phone an expert up, and say “let’s have dinner” and they’d say “yes”, because he’s Douglas Fucking Adams.

This is my observation from over the years.

There are bonfire people, and firework people, and they pretty much directly relate to process goals and target goals.

Bonfire people pick process based goals, build up a good base, nice and wide, keep putting more learning/knowledge/logs on the bonfire, wide at the bottom up to a point at the top, set alight it burns for a long long time, shining out across the land, the embers continuing to glow long after it’s burnt out.

Firework people pick target based goals, and those that manage it, shoot straight up, narrow, focused and fast, and then explode in a glorious burst of colour and sparkles.

This is the thing; those firework people pick a niche, absolutely hammer it, fly high high and true, become the highest, brightest, most noticeable in that niche. Higher, much higher than the bonfire. And once they’re up there, they can make that “phone call” to an expert in a different niche, grab dinner, pick their brains, and get smart in another niche, and then another, and another. To push the very poor analogy even further, when they “explode” in that burst of colour, the sparks can set fire (and persist) to things around them.

People sometimes roll their eyes when a successful actor or musician becomes a successful artist or writer, as though they’ve somehow cheated their way to the top of one thing by first being at the top of another. While that may be true, it’s also, well, true.

You have two choices…

Build a wide base, stay consistent, sustain. Or…

Stay narrow, shoot high, then go wide.

I have no evidence to back this up, but if your objective is to be “wide”, starting narrow then going wide (from being able to meet other people) - or moving sideways at the same level, is a better strategy than starting wide, multi-disciplined and working from there. The fireworks always seem to outpace the bonfires (I am a bonfire fwiw).

Or be a Catherine Wheel, no idea how that works 🔥🎡

# ENVELOPES, AGAIN

After all my talk of making tools that let me draw envelope outlines, and boards to score the creases, see two posts ago: https://newsletter.revdancatt.com/p/069-i-bring-you-the-gift-of-envelopes

And then sticking a cutter on the drawing machine so I didn’t have to cut it out myself, see last post: https://newsletter.revdancatt.com/p/070-when-to-stop-building-tools-and

I was like “Hey, doesn’t Cricut make a scoring tool too?”, so I 3d printed a holder for that, and now I have a whole draw/stamp 👉 score 👉 cut, workflow going on, all in the same GCODE file, with pauses where the machine tells me to change the tool.

This may all seem like a bit of a faff for just envelopes, but in working through this I now have a library of code that allows me to:

Draw, stamp, score, perforate, and cut, all with far more complicated designs than an envelope.

The one bit of code I want to do next, which should be pretty easy, is one that lets me tile or repeat the draw/stamp/score/perforate/cut across a larger sheet of paper, so I can set it away doing four or eight envelopes, or 16 & 32 postcards etc, in one go with less tool changing. ✂️✂️

# TINY KITTY £££ UPDATE

Kitty, my AI PA has been keeping me on track in the studio, still helpful, still need to make a video about it.

I’m vaguely aware of how much Kitty costs to run, enough to not be too worried about it. I had reason to go check on something in the Anthropic/Claude API dashboard and noticed that the last four months cost £42.42 🐈💸

# BOOKS

Two new books arrived in the studio this week, I’m still on my Karel Martens kick with Unbound - showing him once again nailing the combining of rules & print. If you like books with lots of pictures, inspiration, interesting design choices and very few words I can highly recommend it.

Meanwhile Generative Design In Branding has the single worst dust jacket I’ve had on a recent book (sorry), which I immediately ditched, and then almost as immediately got an oily smudge on the cover, so I guess I was the wrong one in that battle.

The rest of the showcases are, fine, it’s nice to see a diversity of work, some familiar faces and best of all, some not. It’s very easy to get trapped in a bubble of knowing one group of people; so being slapped around the face with exposure to a whole new bunch is refreshing and much needed. 📕📔

# GIG

I don’t get out much, by design.

Last week I happened to be in London, so was Laura, who was playing a gig there. We’re generally both not in London, especially not at the same time, so it would seem remiss of me not to at least pop in to catch some tunes, as I believe the kids say.

I only mildly started to feel my anxiety levels going up once, during Carol’s opening set when I became acutely aware of being surrounded by people, which I solved with a quick bit of box breathing (4-4-4-4, 4-4-4-4) - and telling myself I was an actor who was playing the part of someone who was absolutely fine with all these people in an enclosed space. I passed the in-between moments by walking up to strangers and asking them how they ended up being here and then just letting them talk, which was excruciating to do (the walking up part, not the listening bit), but ultimately mainly rewarding, although I haven’t yet worked out how to get out of a conversation when it becomes far too nerdy about cameras or music. A skill I’ll need to practice some other time I guess.

The gig was great, of course.

In a moment of madness we bought a greenhouse and a new shed so that we would do-the-garden.

For the last few weeks I’ve walked down to the end of the garden scattering monkey nuts on the way. I’ll sit in the greenhouse and write for 20 minutes, while the magpies crack open the nuts, that’s our deal.

When I started doing this it was light and warm, now it’s dark and chilly.

Some seeds are arriving this weekend.

All of which is not interesting, but true.

The next newsletter should be out on Thursday the 16th of October, barring any catastrophes; which should be easy considering for the next few months I’m not planning on leaving the house, studio, or greenhouse where I’ll be watering my vegetables 💦🍆

This was the state of my desk the other day, where I was very carefully and gently fitting a Cricut blade holder into a fractionally too small 3d printed Cricut blade holder holder, and it made me inordinately happy for reasons I’ll get into in a moment.

Here’s a terrible photo of the end result.

It’s never coming out of that holder, but I think I’m okay with that, the blade part is still swappable.

Last newsletter was all about envelope SVGs and tools to draw envelope outlines so they could be cut out, folded, stuck and glued and so on. So naturally my mind turned to getting the ArtFrame, (which has already been co-opted into holding rubber stamps), to hold a blade instead.

# PLOTTER STILTS

Surprisingly that worked on the ArtFrame (see later, kinda), but I also wanted to see if I could get a normal AxiDraw/NextDraw to hold the holder. That in turn had me making some “stilts” for the plotter, ‘cause the whole thing needed to be lifted up exactly 37mm…

…the flat jutting out bit is so I can clamp them down to a table if needed. I also modelled and printed some “risers” which are 4mm high and “lock” into place with studs and holes, so I can stack as many as I need together (sticking rubber feet onto the lowest one).

While I still don’t know if the cutter works well in a normal NextDraw, as I haven’t had a chance to try that yet, I do know that people often need to lift the whole machine up to hold things like brushes and the like, so perhaps this’ll help, although there is of course an easier way.

# CUTTING WITH THE ARTFRAME

The short answer is; yes you can! With some caveats and lessons learnt, here’s a kind of bullet list.

⚠️ The blade is more interested in dragging the paper (and cutting board) around than cutting through it.
⚠️ No matter how level your surface is, it’s not really completely level.
⚠️ Different papers have different thicknesses, obvs.
⚠️ You have to be very picky with tuning in the height (i.e. my gcode files won’t work for you).

Here’s the three things I learnt;

💡Taping the paper & board down definitely helped a lot, but didn’t totally solve the dragging paper problem.

💡I ended up creating a single gcode file that cut the outline 5 times, barely scratching the surface the first time, then getting 0.2mm deeper with each pass. Multiple passes means I was only ever making a very shallow cut on each pass, but would eventually get through thick paper. This almost stopped the paper dragging problem. I had to edit the gcode file by hand, copy & pasting the outline a few times and modifying the Z-height.

💡 Along the four long straight edges, top, left, right, bottom, I calculated where the middle was and made the blade lift up, skip a millimetre, then go back down and finish off the line.

This was so the envelope shape was never fully cut out of the paper, which made handling the sheets after cutting easier, and also stopped the blade dragging the paper around, with nothing more than the normal bit of tape in each corner.

I did this by editing the GCODE by hand (again), but a better solution would be to write code that automatically decides where to put the little “bridges” - you could probably even do perforations.

# WRONG TOOLS FOR THE JOB

The easiest way to raise up an AxiDraw (if you can’t find two books with identical thickness) is to cut a couple of blocks of wood and screw the AxiDraw to them. Maybe a two minute job at most, rather than fucking around in a CAD package for an hour and then 3d printing them.

But I don’t have a wood shop.

A better way to cut out envelopes and the like is with a die cutter, you know something designed for this type of thing. But I don’t have one of those either.

Another way would be to use the actual Cricut Maker I have sitting in a box. They solve the problem of paper dragging by having a sticky sheet to keep the paper in place and a spatula to remove it again. But I’ve always found it a pain in the ass to use, and the sticky sheet is either too sticky and you tear the paper removing it, or it’s not sticky enough.

Maybe a laser cutter would work 🤷‍♂️

Instead I have a 3d printer for “woodwork” type jobs, and an ArtFrame that draws, scores, cuts, stamps and letterpresses (kinda) for me, just at a much slower rate, because at this point it’s more of a universal tool than something that does one specific job. And I’m okay with that, especially as I can chain together uses; it can draw, them stamp, then cut all from the same file with pauses to change the tools.

Honestly, if I had a CNC lathe thingy, I think I could happily live at the bottom of the garden in a shed and the greenhouse for the rest of my days.

# TIME TO USE THE TOOLS

I divide my year up into quarters; the idea being that at the end of one and the start of the next I get to look back at what didn’t work, and then plan out the next quarter with this in mind. Being an artist often means self imposed deadlines are fuzzy and projects are never really done before they morph into the start of a new one.

Endless.

The quarterly review is a chance to break that cycle.

Mine is technically next week, but I already know what it’s going to be.

In the first quarter of the year I was; I can do work, the pen plotter tutorials, this & that, and weekly #weeknotes videos. But I just ended up doing work, this & that, and the #weeknotes, no tutorials.

In the second quarter I adjusted; work, pen plotter. tutorials, just this, no that, and #weeknotes.

Sigh.

In the third quarter, the one just gone, I was Okay!! Work, Tutorials & #Weeknotes.

But that just gave me the excuse to do this & that so I can record something for the #weeknotes video. Turns out shooting video of something makes that thing take about four times as long!

Want to sit down and make a notebook? Easy, fun… want to record some video about doing it; lights, camera, angles, editing? Suddenly it’s more than just that. Don’t get me wrong, I love making videos, but I have several thoughts about productivity of just doing & making vs doing, making & teaching, but that’s for another time.

Next quarter; Work & Tutorials!

I’ve spent a lot of timing making tools and systems to make my life easier, and, classic, each one has spawned the next, and the next.

I think I’m about to enter the season of just burrowing away and using the tools, code and systems I’ve spend all this time building, and not recording each and everything thing. There will always be a new tool or system to make, but I think I’ve got enough to keep me happy over the winter 😁

# THE DESK

I have a standing desk; it’s been locked off in the standing position and being used as my tutorial video shoot desk. I locked it off too keep continuity between shoots.

I now have enough of the first batch of tutorials filmed that I’ve decided I can move into editing mode, and moving forwards I’ll put the desk into position when I need it, and then return in back next to me the rest of the time.

I love my studio, it’s full of surfaces and draws, but aside from my worky-work computer desk, this moving standing/sitting desk is the only other one I can sit at to do-stuff and I haven’t been able to do that for about six months.

Frustrating.

It’s only been back in it’s new position for about three days, and I’ve already felt more creative than I have in a long time.

Joyful.

Who knew the answer was cutting shit up? Here I’m trying to figure out how to fashion a packaging box for a notebook out of a single A4 sheet, fun, tricky!

# THE END

The weekly #weeknotes videos are still going to happen, for what it’s worth, and more about that in this week’s video I guess.

Despite all the above about using the tools I’ve made, I am actually going to spend most of the next 12 weeks working on tutorials. The hours I have in the morning will now be spent editing footage, shooting b-roll and pick-up shots and getting all that done and dusted.

Things like making notebooks, folding envelopes and other bits and bobs are now relaxing in the greenhouse in the early morning/evening time. During “work hours” the machines will be doing their thing in the background, and then I get to carry the results home to fold, stitch, write and post.

Will this work? Who knows, I’ll find out in the next quarterly review. I guess the important part is to pick a point, and it may be an inconvenient one, where you force yourself to assess if things are working, is the current rabbit hole what you originally planned, and does it match the goals you set, or are you just flowing from one thing to the next (which is fine, but is that serving you?).

Anyway, these newsletters are still going to keep happening, the next one is due Thursday 2nd of October, but may be a little shorter (press X for doubt), and maths tells me there’ll be six of them in the next quarter, or maybe seven in a pinch, so we’ll have a few opportunities to look back at this newsletter and see how right or wrong I got it 😅

# ONE: THE STENCIL METHOD

So here’s the thing, there are generally two formats to the “net” of a traditional western envelope; the fits perfectly in a square, pointy corners, kinda diagonal one, and the fits nicely in the middle of a sheet of paper more straight on one.

I gave up making the first type, the square one, a good while ago. Because I wanted to use a drawing machine to draw the outline and it’s too flush to the edge of a sheet of paper to do that, and I wanted to draw designs (and an address) on the envelope and working at 45 degree’s is kinda a pita. You can do it, obviously, I just found it more awkward.

Only recently my brain went “Oh wait, perhaps this other envelope would be better?”, I ripped one open and sure enough it fits on the page with a good 5mm margin on the sides, perfect.

So here’s a 3d printable stencil you can drop down onto any pen plot or print you want to turn into an envelope, draw round it, cut it out, and fold into an envelope. Or, you know, unstick an envelope, draw round it into cardboard and make a more eco-friendly stencil.

Which would be file `01 - Envelope stencil - flat.stl` in the zip.

And because I can’t leave well enough alone, I made two more versions with an extra bit of utility; slots where you can sketch-in/see where the edges/folds of the envelope will be, and a very over the top handle which makes the whole thing easier to hold and move around, but harder to store in a draw.

But wait! That’s not all!

‘Cause it’s best to make your envelope out of slightly thicker paper (maybe 140-170gsm) and that’s mildly inconvenient to fold if you have somehow lost ALL YOUR RULERS, I made a “scoring board” to pair with the stencil, so once you’ve cut out the envelope, if you haven’t completely screwed it up (ask me how I know), it’ll fit nicely in the tray and you can easily score the folds in.

And here’s an envelope cut out of a 70s Pop rejected print (will need a sticky address label for this one).

# TWO: Plot the outline

Hold on a moment though, we’ve got access to a drawing machine, can’t we just, you know, get it to draw the outline without all that stencil nonsense?

Why yes you can with `01 single envelope.svg` - carefully centred on an A4 sheet of paper, (sorry USA) - stick a pencil (for once) in the plotter and draw the outline on the back of a print or plot and you’re good to go!

You’ve got your drawing machine making plots anyway, so you may as well flip the page over and draw an outline to turn them into nice custom envelopes

Somewhere on the internet I read about how to make good tacky semi-sticky glue for folding the flap down so it stays shut but people can still easily open it. But it seemed like a lot of hard work, so I just use three dabs of stick glue instead.

# THREE: Hidden line removal

Both of the above two options involve taking a full printed/plotted design and then cutting it into an envelope shape, however, we can reduce plotting time & ink by using hidden line removal, and only plotting the parts of the design we need.

Something that was pretty complicated a couple of years ago, but the fairly recent addition of a ‘hidden line removal’ check-box when plotting from the NextDraw extension, or doing a ‘Save a copy…’ and then picking ‘NextDraw “Plob” Digest (*.svg)’ which gives you the same option.

You do your design as normal, in code or otherwise, open it up in InkScape, then drag on the `03 envelope mask.svg` file, which should cover everything else up. This’ll be used as the “mask” when running the hidden line removal.

Important to note: the mask has 1cm of extra margin around the edge, so you want to position it at X: -1.000 & Y: -1.000 (or -10,10 if you’re working in mm).

The boring technical reason for this is that if a point of a line of your design falls exactly on the edge of a mask, the code sometimes doesn’t know if the point is inside or outside, so it crops off the rest of the line and leaves an orphan dot at the edge.

Making the mask bigger than the page stops that from happening.

For similar reasons there’s a second file called `04 envelope mask overlap.svg`, which removes the “seam” down at the bottom which could otherwise leave orphan dots.

# BONUS: Address label

Through extensive research (buying some printable address labels off Amazon), it seems that a reasonable size for a small address area is 62x28mm, or a larger area of 100x57mm.

If you’re cutting an envelope out of a design, or plotting the whole thing, then getting some blank address labels is a good way of dealing with that.

If however you want to continue to use the hidden line removal, I’ve also added two files `05 address mask 62x38.svg` and `06 address mask 100x57.svg` which you can drop in to also mask out areas of your design.

# FOUR: Drawing inside the lines

Perhaps though, you’re like me and want to have full control over what’s going on, and maybe play with designs that fit inside the boundaries of the envelope, and around the address area.

Well, rejoice, ‘cause I’ve also included .json files which have the x,y cords of all the points that make the envelope, and the two address label sizes, with the correct positing for an A4 sheet (with 0,0 being the top left corner). I’ve got two more things to add to that before I go off on one.

1 - I’ve included `02 nested envelope.svg/json` which has the normal envelope outline, one that’s expanded by 5mm, and two which are contracted by 5mm and 10mm - which gives you some wiggle room when figuring out how close to the edge of the envelope you want to get.

🤓 Technical note: you can lerp between the envelope points and the inner 10mm points to get other border widths between 0-10mm 🧮

2 - Below are some links to a fairly detailed write-up of a: is this point inside or outside of a polygon algorithm, called the Winding Number method. I’m including this algorithm because although it’s slight overkill for the simple polygon that’s our envelope, some people may find it interesting for more complex tasks.

With the envelope outline, the address label outline, and the above is this point inside or outside of a polygon algorithm, you can now do fun stuff like;

• Randomly pick x,y co-ords for shapes/dots etc, and only draw the ones inside the envelope (but not inside the address label).

• Do some interesting shape packing, or throw a physics library at it.

• Particles and collision detection, “grow” some lines from starting points and stop when they hit the edge, the address box or another line.

# My envelopes so far

I’m still pretty early into my envelope adventures, but I thought I’d share where I’m up to so far (and why further down).

# BUT WHY? 🇺🇸📮❌

The short version is that I used to post larger plots and prints to friends (and buyers) in the US, and had great fun plotting the packaging that went with it. But now posting anything that isn’t “just a letter” to the USA is fraught with all kinda of uncertainty (if you can get the thing shipped at all).

With this in mind, I’ve been scaling my experiments down to more postcard size; I still want to send art to friends, just tiny letter sized art that won’t trigger, well, who knows what. As there’s less packaging available to plot on, I may as well have a go at the whole envelope.

Sometimes they’ll be made of prints, sometimes pen plots, or rubber stamps and maybe even cut up riso prints.

The other part is, I’ve been enjoying diving into the work of Karel Martens, whose work is both very print and very rules based. Here’s a description from the book “Love Letters”

What I particularly like about his monoprints is they’re printed on various index type cards that Karel could get his hands on, which adds a lovely dimension to them.

“His work is not glamorous. In fact, his monoprints series was created using found metal objects taken from discarded car parts, disks, and other miscellaneous objects collected from the side of the road. He uses these objects to print ink on found paper. His methods are slow but very precise—he prints one colour per day, waits for it to dry, and prints the second colour the next day. Now obviously there’s a lot of people who over-print onto found materials, and more who print with halftone patterns, and while I’m not intending to copy Martens, I’m happily being very inspired by his work at the moment to put my own spin on it and send my own printed envelopes to friends and fellow artists, with love.

I’m going to write about this in the next newsletter (Thursday 18th September) but I’ve been thinking a bit about making tools vs using tools, and I feel like I’ve spent a good long while making tools; code, systems, processes, 3d prints, to allow me to do various things with as little friction as possible, but not leaving enough time for the actual doing.

Or perhaps it’s a seasonal thing, I’ve been sowing the seeds and now it’s time to move into harvesting them. Either way, more thoughts about that next time, when I’ve had a chance to have them.

The last six weeks or so have been “crunchy” with work; deadlines, stress and the resulting tiredness. The deadline was hit, and I’m moving into the fix-all-the-things-that-didn’t-quite-make-it-in phase, which is busy but not stressful. I even got three more tutorials videos recorded, so progress on that front too.

I’ve been thinking about setting up Patreon and my shop again, so there’s something in place for when the tutorials go live. While I’m not a huge fan of locking knowledge behind various paid tiers, putting things like a .zip of the .svgs and 3d printer files behind at least a free membership feels okay — due to the horror stories I’ve heard of people uploading 3d files to the web in general for free out of the kindness of their hearts, only for people to immediately take the files and start selling them as their own — putting them behind the mildest locked door of free membership, won’t stop that, but it will at least indicate original ownership*.

As part of the Patreon set-up process they suggest making a few posts so there’s already something there when it launches. I was going to add the .zip file I posted above to see how all that worked, but I’ve run out of time; something for the future then.

# CODING CODE BASED ART FOR A RISO PRINTER

Quick recap, a riso printer is kinda like a cross between screen printing and a photocopier. If you wanted to screen print something (like a t-shirt) using three colours, you’d make a screen for each colour, and then force paint through those screens, pretty standard.

The riso printer is basically that, but the screens are wrapped around ink drums in a machine that looks and works like a photocopier. It’s cheaper and faster than screen printing, (but you’re limited to the ink colours you have) and slightly more fiddly and more effort to use and maintain.

The FUN part is that the inks are kinda semi-opaque (or semi-transparent if you’d prefer), sometime fluorescent, and you have to think in “opacities”, i.e. mixing 40% yellow + 40% fluorescent pink gets you a dark, but bright funky orange colour.

…so, what happens if you just so happen to be a generative/code/algorithm based artist, who write code to create lovely images, and wants to send those to a riso printer? How do you separate out the colours to send them to print?

Well, thankfully you can use spectrolite app: https://spectrolite.app/ which does that colour separation for you, here’s a screenshot…

…the left most image is the original full colour image I dropped in. The right colourful image is a preview of what the app thinks it’ll look like. Over on the very right is the greyscale separations, one for red, one for yellow.

Feed an image in, get the files you need to send to the riso printer back out. The cool thing about spectrolite is you can tell it which inks you own and then only use those colours when splitting the image up.

However in my great wisdom I thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it be better if, instead of my code spitting out a final design and then using spectrolite, I instead had an empty greyscale canvas for each ink colour, and used code to draw to them separately! Then I can send those directly to the riso printer, and also combine them to get a preview?”

Above we have; code on the very left. The two greyscale canvas objects I’m writing directly to, then both of those coloured with the ink colours I have (randomly selected), and then finally a preview on the right of what they look like blended together.

Which is the preview I fed into spectrolite above to see how it’s separation compared to my original grey scales images.

Here’s nine more preview outputs, each one is made up of only two colours blended together.

The top three are before I added the actual falling water to FALLiNGWATER. The middle three are before I added the colour code to the water, it’s just the white silhouette of the water. The last row is with the colour added.

Because I’m tired and it’s late I’m going to cut right to the part that I think is the interesting/fun bit, and perhaps you will too.

With riso printing we’re thinking in opacities. To make the sides of the floating blocks light-ish we’re “punching out” the background with white first, and then drawing in 20% grey on one of the canvases, to give us 20% opacity in whichever colour.

To make the bottom of the blocks dark, we’re aiming for 80% opacity, taking the middle image as an example, which is blue & pink, we can use 80% blue, or 80% pink, or 40% blue + 40% pink.

Or to get different shades between whichever two colours you’ve chosen you could also do 10% + 70%, 20% + 60%, 30% + 50% and so on, any combination that adds up to 80%

# KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID

It’s at this point I’d like to say something about how writing the greyscale images directly, rather than using spectrolite is somehow better; that it gives you more control.

That juggling two (or more) canvas objects instead of just one, and then drawing design elements to one, the other, or both, in various opacities, while keeping track of which parts to punch out, or mask out, means the end result is better than giving over control to something that’s “simply” just separating them out.

But I suspect that’s not true, or if it is true, the advantage is marginal. If having full control gives me 100% perfect outputs, spectrolite (in this instance) is giving me about 97% perfect outputs. And considering how imperfect riso can be, that’ll be eaten up by the printing process anyway.

I’ve circled round “why generating the greyscale images directly in code is better, actually” - and the best I can come up with is…

…it’s an interesting exercise in coding and thinking about colour mixes.

In every other way it’s harder, more time consuming and, honestly, irritating, than throwing it into spectrolite. I guess the main plus side is that I can quickly switch out and swap the ink colours in the preview 🤷‍♂️

# PREVIEW

Before sending anything off to the riso printer I also printed some of the earlier previews on the Epson SC P900 to get a feel for it…

Which leaves me in the weird position of aiming towards the end result being generative, unique (or very limited), riso prints, but really liking the work in progress test prints that don’t even have the falling water in.

Annoying!

And to really drive the point home, here’s a four colour separation done in spectrolite, from an original FALLiNGWATER.

I think what I’m trying to say is, I’m glad I’ve been exploring ways to code for riso, but I guess sometime you don’t always come out ahead no matter the amount of effort you put in. Will I continue? Yes, because I’ve now built the tools. Would I have just been better off using spectrolite in the first place and spending my somewhat limited time differently? Also yes! 😅

According to my records, the next newsletter should be out on the 4th of September, by which time I really hope things are a bit more chilled and laid back for me. I’d say the last six weeks have been pretty full on, and I’m ready to get back into art-ing (and tutorial video making-ing) again.

Oh, one day these riso prints (and normal prints) will be in my shop, but that’s looking like a 2026 thing now, uhoh!

…is in particularly crunchy crunch mode at the moment. Not so much that I’m sacrificing work/life balance, but enough that I’m sacrificing this newsletter deadline today. Also I’m cat sitting this week [Edit: more on that later], which mainly involves having bad sleep while the cat sits on my head. In that spirit I present a mainly pictorial edition.

# VESTABOARD PATTERNS

I wanted to update my rubber stamping code (next section). I took that as an excuse to shoot some video explaining the logic & process behind aligning text, which started with the Vestaboard as an example.

The main gist being that you try and fit words in, until you can’t, and then move onto the next line, repeating the process with increased padding on both sides until the text fills all six line, wrapping it up with some simple maths to centre the text.

I would write that out in more detail but; I’m already late with the newsletter, I’ve explained it better in last weeks #Weeknotes, and I’m still kinda distracted by the idea there may be a pigeon head somewhere behind the sofa because I still haven’t found it yet.

There’s 22 flip “bits” across and 6 rows down on a Vestaboard, and basically you send an array of numbers down the wire (or over the air), where each number represents a letter, number, symbol or colour, it looks a bit like this…

I was going to focus more on the pattern part, but I haven’t been able to get into the studio to take the photos I wanted (and let’s face it, now you’ve seen the array structure and the colour codes, you could probably already code up a Vestaboard pattern maker yourself), instead, here’s last Friday’s video…

…and I promise you only need to watch the first 35 seconds, which is where the fun noise flipping stuff happens. Honestly, hit play, watch the first half-minute, and then you’re done. Unless it tries to show you an advert in which case don’t bother.

# THE STAMPY STOMPY MACHINE

All of the above was so I could explain some of the maths behind the layout code for the rubber stamps.

Which basically means I can now send arbitrary text to my code, and it’ll figure out how to centre/left/right/align it all on any sized paper and generate the GCODE for the pen plotter.

Still working on the vertical alignment though. And don’t come at me about the lack of apostrophe or commas, I may need to hand carve rubber stamps for those.

BEE VS OMI AI

Last week I mentioned that BEE the wearable always listening AI thingy had been bought by Amazon (boo!), so I grabbed an Omi to see how that is.

The short version is that it’s fine, just fine, perfectly adequate, while being slightly worse in nearly every way.

The form factor; fractionally worse. The way it charges; fractionally worse. The instructions; almost perfectly usable. The software is … evolving and mostly works.

The developer documentation always seems to be talking about something slightly different, some words maybe mean different things now, screenshots have different UI layouts? Their branding is awful, the box design is grim, how they’re pitching it on their website is just super confusing.

But luckily it does what it’s supposed to do, which is record and transcribe what you say, apart from those odd times it doesn’t and you don’t realise until later.

Thankfully just like the Bee, you can grab the transcripts, which is all I really want, so I can process them myself, but the way you get those transcripts is predictably ever-so-slightly more awkward than the Bee.

On the plus side it’s open source and hasn’t been bought by Amazon, which makes it infinitely better.

I’ll report back once I’ve had a chance to use it some more. Mainly though I have managed to feed what comes out of it into my Obsidian notes app, and therefor also Kitty my AI, without Amazon listening in, so nearly two thumbs up for that.

# CURSOR IDE & OBSIDIAN & PYTHON; VERY NICHE

If you use Cursor as your code editor for the AI features, and you use Obsidian for keeping all your notes, and you’re okay with letting the AI Agent spin up python scripts, then open up your Obsidian vault in Cursor and have fun by asking the AI Agent to do… stuff.

A blast from the past for music this week.

…which means in theory I haven’t done anything since the last newsletter other than work, some backend code maintenance, going down to London and recording tutorial videos.

This is good; I said I was going to prioritise recording the videos knowing full well that comes at the price of not doing anything else. This is bad; because it means there’s no nice photos or things to talk about in this newsletter.

# WHERE DO IDEAS COME FROM (again)

Way back in issue #1 I talked a bit about where ideas come from. In it I wrote about Elizabeth Gilbert and her book Big Magic, where she describes a metaphorical space where ideas live and are trying to escape from, and you as the artist can help them do that, and if you don’t they’ll go find another artist to help them (and we should be fine with that).

Then I rolled into “Ideaspace” from the mind of Alan Moore, which is similar, a place where ideas live, and with the right tools you can enter, or help ideas exit (or both).

In either case an argument is made for how to find, free, make real or otherwise immanentize an idea; OED sez: “transitive. To make (something which is transcendent) immanent; to render (something abstract) real, actual, or capable of being experienced. Cf. immanent adj. 3.” - often via repeated artistic practice, ritual or copious amounts of drugs, sometimes all three.

# WHERE DO SOME IDEAS GO

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a film centred around finding the face melting Ark of the Covenant; guns, car chases, nazis, action, adventure etc. the kicker being right at the end, that even though we’ve just seen all this world-changing-very-important-stuff going on, the Ark is filed away in some government warehouse as though it’s just one more thing along with the thousands of other things, because presumably this bullshit is going on all the time.

A premise so engaging/tropey that the single final “throw away” scene essentially got turned into a 64 episode, 5 series tv show Warehouse 13, staring the amazing actor Saul Rubinek, and 👋 (who I am reliably informed doesn’t read this newsletter).

The main thing I’m getting at here is that in both the above medias, the dangerous thing is ultimately contained and safely tucked away, along with all the other ones.

That’s the end of the story. Which brings me to…

# SPECIAL CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES

Or SCP, which is…

“The SCP Wiki is a collaborative speculative fiction website about the SCP Foundation, a secretive organization that contains anomalous or supernatural items and entities away from the eyes of the public — or so it may appear.

The wiki is a collaborative effort made possible by the contributions of hundreds of authors. If you want to become a part of the SCP Wiki, you can apply to become a site member.”

The fictional mission statement is…

…threefold:

Secure — secure anomalies to prevent them from falling into the hands of civilian or rival agencies through extensive observation and surveillance, acting to intercept anomalies at the earliest opportunity.

Contain — contain anomalies to prevent spread of their influence or effects; by either relocating, concealing, or dismantling them, or by suppressing public dissemination of knowledge thereof.

Protect — protects humanity as well as the anomalies themselves until such time that they are either fully understood or new theories of science can be devised based on their properties and behavior.

The framework used to write the fiction is generally in the form of a file, or case notes written when something has been contained and safely secured (think X-Files-ish meets creepypasta meets fan fiction), and this writing exercise has been going on for around 18 years.

# AI AND THE IMMANETIZATION OF IDEAS

So a speculative fiction website often dealing with containing and securing anomalous & supernatural memes and ideas has sat happily contained and secured on it’s own website all this time, until some prick came along and turned off the containment unit.

LLMs, Large Language Models have slurped it all up an act of training AI on language, all language, rather than say, just fact about how the real world works. And now all those fictional stories, all those ideas are mixed in with everything else.

Something “interesting” happened the other day, you can read more about that over here: “The tech bros are making themselves sick” for a good background, here’s an extract…

“Lewis began posting last week that ChatGPT had alerted him to a “non-governmental system” — some kind of otherworldly entity or AI model — that he seems to think is targeting him and suppressing his business opportunities and, apparently, killing people. Lewis also released a video about this non-governmental system in which, he, uh, appears, to be reading directly from a ChatGPT-generated script.

…as I was reading through what Lewis has been posting I immediately clocked what was actually going on. He’s accidentally triggered an SCP roleplay.

As X user @tilehopper wrote, ‘The SCP Foundation unintentionally creating cognitohazard for LLMs and it causes a tech bro to have cyberpsychosis is the most SCP thing that ever happened.’”

As a creative person, I’ve always subscribed to the idea of, well, acting in ways to help ideas come to you; writing, relaxing, boredom, repetition, practice and so on. In the hopes that you can maybe eke out a single idea (from "Ideaspace”) now and then.

What I wasn’t expecting was AI to come along and flip the fucking switch to let all ideas out, everywhere, all at once; is the idea in the room with us now?

It was at this point I wrote out an overly long segue that linked the Immanentization of ideas via AI above, to the immanentizing of the Eschaton, to manifesting creativity, Discordianism, the balance of order and chaos and finally to the goddess Eris — but like I said, overly long, so she’ll have to be tucked away for another time, instead…

# BOOK RECOMMENDATION TIME

The other day I was feeling like chucking everything, like there was so much going on that I didn’t have control over, that the only stuff left that I did have control over was my stuff, and wouldn’t life be simpler if there was less of it.

Then I remembered that I actually like my stuff and if anything should get in the trash it should be the internet. But I did think “If I could keep just one book which one would it be?” and it was this one Syllabus by Lynda Barry.

A book I wanted to keep so much that I noticed I’d already given away my second copy (that I bought because I gave away my first copy), so I ordered another one, along with another three of her books about drawing, writing and comics (having also given away a copy of the drawing book).

What I love about her books is they’re attainable, they’re dense enough to be endlessly fascinating but just about scrappy enough to not be intimidating. And I have to confess despite owning it twice and it being one of my favorite books I’ve never finished it, ‘cause whenever I work through it I’ll suddenly get the urge to go and make something.

I’m not sure I’ll ever actually finish the book, perhaps one day when I’m stubborn.

If I could cheat with the “keep one book” rule, I’d have all four thank you!

# FUCKING BEE AI, FUCKING AMAZON

Short and simple this one, I’m not even going to link to it.

I’ve really enjoyed the “Always on, always listening to everything and everyone around you” Bee AI wrist pendant thing, see newsletter #062 for more info.

Anyway, I only used it when no-one else was around, with certain guard rails set on it, so that along with it’s handy API that was enough for me to be kinda-okay-ish with it.

But Amazon has just bought it.

It’d be bad enough wearing an always on, always listening device that sends everything to Amazon, but worse; being out enjoying yourself, chatting with friends, on the next table over to someone else wearing an always on, always listening device that sends everything to Amazon (or being that person).

Instead I’m going to have a play with the open source Omi AI instead, because the main thing stopping me from building my own is the hardware part, so this at least seems to solve that problem. Or at least until they too get bought by Amazon.

# WORK & THE END

The last two weeks have been harder than normal because my wonderful co-worker and joint tech lead handed their notice in the other week, to go off and do an interesting and fascinating job. Which is cool, and nothing but love and congratulations for them.

And I’ve gotten pretty good at setting boundaries and not stressing, I’m kinda an expert at it now even. My workload hasn’t suddenly doubled, because I still only have the same amount of time to do things in, and the stuff will happen in that time. And I’m not particularly stressed by it, because I don’t really have that much control over it, it just is.

Instead I’ve chosen to be somewhat kind to myself and set my creative expectations down real low for the last couple of weeks and upcoming couple of weeks, until the new normal has settled in.

Hence no updates to the projects page on my website for the last couple of weeks, even though I have push a few things forwards slightly with non-visual background stuff and recorded the raw footage for four more of the tutorial videos.

They still need cutting together, editing, b-roll added, resources put onto GitHub and the website for the updated, but that’s all the 20% stuff of the 80/20 rule, should be fine!

The next newsletter will be the 7th of August, 2025, and maybe I’ll drop the Eris stuff in there, or the whole draft of using Spectral.js to do colour separation for Riso printing that’s still sitting in my dashboard.
